I thought I'd share this and get other opinions.  Firstly, the drives.  A WD Black 2.5" HDD made in 2009 but according to SMART it only has 86 days of power on time clocked.  So while 'old' it's also 'lightly used'.  The other drive is a Patriot Blast 960GB SSD which is brand new.  ...Brand new, because it has been RMAed twice.  The first one died at 11 months and it's first replacement died at 6 months.  Yeah, not buying storage from Patriot again.

Next is the machine.  It's not a typical desktop but rather an HTPC.  It boots and it runs two main applications, Kodi or Steam Big Picture mode.  That's it.  Any other applications are games for Steam.  So, as you can imagine I'm unwilling to trust this new SSD and while it's last two siblings served in my desktop workstation, a Samsung EVO 850 is there now.

So going contrary to the idea of 'Small SSD for OS, Big HDD For Games' I went the reverse.  The 240GB HDD should be reliable, while it's 'old' it's also barely been used, it was recycled from a friend's laptop and I guess they didn't use that laptop much at all.  The SSD is installed purely to act as the install location for Steam because, well, what else can I trust it with?  Most Steam games will use the cloud or save to a folder in My Documents or something, so should the drive fail like it's predecessors, I'm only out a bunch of game data I downloaded which can be redownloaded without issue.

But I thought I'd get some opinions on an approach like this.
