Folding program almost cooked my pc

Go to solution Solved by Cryptonite,

Basically what happened was that the Folding software was running in the background without me knowing. I just booted up my pc like i would do normally, and turn my fans all the way down for silent operation. It was first when i randomly turned on precision x that i could see the gpu running 60+ degrees. I am using a 670 direct cu ii and that + no airflow = BAD

Is there a way to make it not run in the background when booting?

using what version of windows? anyway windows button and R then type in msconfig, go to the startup tab and search for the folding program and untick it.

For me it doesn't start up on boot. When you're done just make sure that you have it set to off on the slider and exit the program before you turn off your computer. Or if that doesn't work check the start up programs in "msconfig" and if it on just uncheck it..

Lol serious? 75C idle? My 680 idles at 30C wat

It is designed to be at 95 on load so 75 idle doesn't seem too bad, but still, it is a little high.

75 on idle seems crazy imo, mine on full load, OC'ed with a reference cooler goes to 80 with a manual fan curve optimized for silence, i feel sorry for the room of the 290 owners lol

around 60 *c is perfectly fine, nothing to be worried about at all, the hardware is made to handle that and more.

R9-290X can hit 95C, that sounds like it'd give you a heart attack. 60C for a GPU while folding is pretty low in my opinion, my GPU hits 70+ in games when I have an OC enabled and was high 60s when I used to fold on it. GPU's are just hot chips in general, they are fine running at more than 30C.

Just disable F@H launch on startup to make it not run, then launch when you want to fold. I think it saves the previous setting when you shutdown, so set F@H to Off before turning off your computer if you don't want to launch it all the time.

It does seem crazy to have 75 idle, but I suppose it can't do any harm since normal temps are 95 I suppose.

Yea i get that, a lot of people are misunderstanding me, I know what temps a GPU can run safely at, but it was the fact that the airflow was cut to a minimum and the gfx card was cooking the other components. :)
