I have an internal blu ray drive, an Asus BC-12D2DHT. I watched a blu ray the other day and it was fine but I'm trying to watch another one and every time I try to play it, it comes up with a message saying :

Quote

WARNING

Your Blu-ray Player requires an update in order to play this disc.

Please visit your Blu-ray Player manufacturer's website and follow their instructions to update your Blu-ray Player.

then comes up with this:

I've gone on the Asus website and downloaded the latest driver but doesn't make a difference.

Any ideas?

Are you downloading the latest driver or firmware?  You mention both in your post and finish it with a driver.

Try using it with VLC instead of CyberLink.  I really hate that software.

Actually just looking, I downloaded the Asus E-Green utility which is not the driver. THere doesnt seem to be anything else for my drive on their website.

Any idea how to update the firmware?

I tried with VLC and got this:

I looked on the website as well and didn't find any firmware available.  I would think it's an update for CyberLink.  Get away from it as fast as possible.

I think it has to do with security on the disks.  I remember having to do that with my BR drive years ago when I got a movie that had just come out.  It's frankly a pain.

It is a geo lock, meaning it only can be played in the designated area of the globe. The number can be found on the back of the dvd case.

Where do I find that? The disc was bought in the UK and it has UK classification on it so don't see why it would be locked to a different region.

With regard to region lock it just says "A B C these discs will only play in blu-ray players manufactured to operate in your region and showing at least one of these symbols (A B C) on their back panel, instruction manual or packaging"

But on the disc it just has the ABC triangle so does that mean its region unlocked? I can't find any other reference.

Wait does it have any letter in the middle, or is it all the letters and nothing in the middle? The one in the middle indicates a region lock.

this is what i see:

1. VLC can't handle the protection on this particular disc

2. PowerDVD needs a patch/update before it can handle the protection on this particular disc

3. you need to have the paid version of PowerDVD to get patches/updates (that is what? 50 bucks a year?)

4. several hours of time wasted already to get a fucking BD movie playing just because some paranoid asshats decided that fancy copy protection is a good thing and sure helps them to secure a lot of income.

and the next minute they wonder why so many people pirate .... and decide to invent an even more fucked up copy protection as a reaction that makes all of this even worse

this makes me so angry it isn't even funny ...

anyways ... i know there is a piece of software that lets you play those difficult BD movies ... i just don't remember the name right now ... i'll ask my brother tomorrow - he's the one who found it and uses it the most

MakeMKV?

doesn't help with protected media AFAIK - besides that - i think the OP just wants to watch the movie, not copy it

the player my brother uses is called leawo blu-ray player and so far it worked with every disc we threw at it - even those discs where VLC failed

I have the paid version of PowerDVD. I don't know why the patch updater told me I couldn't as I had a trial version. I paid like £50 for it and it's not an annual renewal, I'm sure when I bought it that its a full licence. It's ridiculous. I ended up watching Planet of the Apes on some shitty pirate site, even though I've paid for the blu ray, paid for the blu ray player and paid for the software licence. It's flipping frustrating.

THIS is exactly what i was talking about ... stupid corporate morons.

but instead of fixing this and making it easier for their cusomers to enjoy the content they paid for on whatever device they want to ... they make it even more complicated and restricted so people turn to pirated content even faster ...
