So I'm still gaming on a FX-8320 and it starts to get a little annoying (full specs below).

I basically play only one game, Factorio, in short: a factory sim / logistics management game which is, according to the devs and the community, a highly single-threaded game that loves high-bandwidth and low-latency RAM. As I don't yet have the budget for a full platform upgrade I was thinking of swapping my current 16GB 1866Mhz CL10 RAM (true latency: 10,72ns) for something better. These are the options i'm looking at:

8GB Corsair Vengence Pro 2133Mhz CL8 true latency 7.50ns

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/JCfp99/corsair-memory-cmy8gx3m2a2133c8r

8GB G.Skill Trident X 2400Mhz CL10 True latency 8.33ns

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Wg6BD3/gskill-memory-f32400c10d8gtx

I never really use more than 8GB RAM and I think I may be able to sell my 16GB kit for about the same price as a high performance 8GB kit.

- If this helps at all, would the lower latency (Corsair) or the higher bandwidth (G.Skill) be the better choice in this case? Recommendations for other RAM kits are welcome.

- Will I be able to use something similar to an XMP-profile or do I have to manually OC the RAM to achieve these specs? And will that require me to re-do the OC on my CPU as well?

- Is it even worth the fuss? :P

Thanks for your thoughts and ideas!

AMD FX-8320BE @4.5Ghz

Asus Sabertooth 990FX mobo

4x4GB Kingston Hyper-X Fury 1866Mhz RAM

2133/8 would be a bit better as it has tighter timings along with it's bandwidth.

I forgot to mention though that corsair kit is the only one available with that low latency and is about €30 more expensive than the G.Skill kit or similar ones of which there are about a dozen available.

Is it still worth it at that price difference?

For $100, no. If it were the same cost, yes. Go with the 2400/10 kit if your motherboard can take something that fast.

Thanks.

I have the Asus Sabertooth 990FX, which (I think) is one of the higher tier mobos for the AM3+ socket. But I have a hard time finding a RAM support list for this mobo.

a highly single-threaded game

Your fx has terrible single threaded performance. A memory upgrade will yield a few fps difference. Save till you have enough for a ryzen chip.

Did you even read beyond the words you quoted from me?

I'm well aware of the awful IPC of my CPU but not a single core is pegged at 100% which leads me to believe faster RAM might be able to push a few more FPS out of the CPU (or UPS, Factorio measures Updates Per Second).

As I said, I'm never really using 16GB and I can probably sell it for the price of a faster 8GB kit, so I'm not really wasting money if I can see an improvement from it. And don't worry I'll probably move to a new platform sometime early next year, I'm just looking for a little boost to keep me going in the meantime.
