How powerful does your CPU need to be for gaming ?

I need to upgrade my PC, I've set my eyes on RX 480/580 8GB MSI but if the prices don't drop after summer I'll probably buy a GTX 1060.

But I need to pick a CPU now, and I have no idea what I should get.

This is my current build : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/w3GQbj

This is the list of what I'm going to be playing mostly: GTA5; Rust; Conan Exiles; PUBG; The Witcher 3.

I don't have a exact budget, but please don't go overkill. I'm looking for the smallest price possible for 1080p gaming at medium/high settings.

I have a I5-4590 and gtx 970 right now and get about 75-100 fps on Rust, only going as low as 50-60 on large late wipe servers. I get 60-70 on medium in PUBG, 70+ on Conan iirc and 100+ in GTA5. The only games I have run into serious issues with is Arma3 where I have a hard time getting 50fps on minimum on modded servers because of the CPU limits.

CPU: I5 4590 Motherboard: ASROCK H97 Pro4 Ram: XPG 16gb v2.0 4x4 kit  GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 PSU: EVGA 550w Supernova G2 Storage: 128 gb Sandisk SSD + 525gb Mx300 SSD Cooling: Be Quiet! Shadow Rock LP Case: Zalman T2 Sound: Logitech Z506 5.1 Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma Keyboard: DBPower LED

That is good to know, I just checked the price for a i5-4590 where I live and its roughly 225 USD, do you think I can get more performance for that price with a different CPU ?

The best value right now is the r5 1600 so I would probably get something like that.

That means a new mobo and some new ram. Not exactly "best value" for OP.

For just 1080p games, an i5 4670/4690 is enough. I use a 4460 and frame rates sometimes drop below 60fps in AAA games. Of course, if you can find an i7 at an affordable price then go for it.

The pricing for processors seems wierd for me. An r5 1600, i5-7500 and 4690 have the same price. Obviously I would need to invest in a new motherboard and ram with the r5 and i5, but would it be worth it for the performance increase?

By the way where about is your fps in the games you play with your rx 470 build ?

The real price of upgrading to a R5 1600 would be at least ~$400. And ~$350 for a 7500.
Either way the 7500 should be out of the running because you can get a locked 4790 which would still be better than the 7500.
Upgrading to the R5 would be around twice the price of getting a locked I5 for the setup you have now. But, youd have 50% more cores and 3x the number of threads.
