Can you Read any M.2 Device in an M.2 slot?

rewird

Hey everyone;

We have a project for work were trying to sort out, long story short we need to somehow flash a new firmware on an me906s Huawei 4gx receiver:

http://consumer.huawei.com/solutions/m2m-solutions/en/products/tech-specs/me906s-158-en.htm

The receiver is actually plugged into another router which is using a linux os for it, but only the routers firmware is up-gradable at this point. Since the me906s is M.2, is it possible to use in a M.2 slot on my spare motherboard and communicate via that?

Thank you

There is different "keyings" for M.2, the most common being B, E, and M. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#Form_factors_and_keying  You will have to look at the card you have and determine which type it is, based on where the notch on the card is.

EDIT: Based on the image on the linked page, this looks like a "B" keyed card, which makes sense since B keyed connectors are the only ones that carry the pins needed for SIM cards to communicate with the M.2 card. So you would need to look for a motherboard that had a B keyed socket that accepted 42mm cards (you may also have to check the clearance around the connector, because most motherboards are made only expecting 22mm wide cards).

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

If the M.2 slot you're using has PCIe connectivity and is keyed right I would think that you could get it to detect in the slot on a BIOS level.  I've used lots of Intel PCIe wireless cards that are essentially an adapter from full size PCIe to M.2 (looks like this), so you may be able to find just an adapter card and use it in a full size PCIe slot as well.  Getting the OS to detect/talk to it would still be a challenge.
