A little sneak peek of my upcoming build, Chaos Breaker.

I'll update the specs, when I have the system up and running, system is gonna run with 64GB of Dominator RAM when completed [is running with 32G atm], is powered by i9 7900X and will house Asus ROG GTX 1080 Ti OC.

Been there, done that. All I can say is a massive NOPE. I'm giving AMD a chance in a next decade, or two, not a year closer. Cost me 2500+e just to try it for a month and a half. Dissapointment of a decade.

Well, I hope you bought a fire extinguisher for your new processor. I'm sure you will need it (also keep in mind the "thermal paste" on the i9 is basically just glue. (citation needed) Seriously).

If it's just for gaming, you might actually have slightly worse performance on the 7900x vs the 7740k. i9 has a LOT of cores, but for gaming that doens't always translate to better fps. 7740k will have better IPC (due to being a newer architecture) and can clock higher due to not having as many cores (aka less heat generation)

Gaming build:

CPU: i7-7700k (5.0ghz, 1.312v)

GPU(s): Asus Strix 1080ti OC (~2063mhz)

Memory: 32GB (4x8) DDR4 G.Skill TridentZ RGB 3000mhz

Motherboard: Asus Prime z270-AR

PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W

Cooler: Custom water loop (420mm rad + 360mm rad)

Case: Be quiet! Dark base pro 900 (silver)
Primary storage: Samsung 960 evo m.2 SSD (500gb)

Secondary storage: Samsung 850 evo SSD (250gb)

 

Server build:

OS: Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS (though will probably upgrade to 17.04 for better ryzen support)

CPU: Ryzen R7 1700x

Memory: Ballistix Sport LT 16GB

Motherboard: Asrock B350 m4 pro

PSU: Corsair CX550M

Cooler: Cooler master hyper 212 evo

Storage: 2TB WD Red x1, 128gb OCZ SSD for OS

Case: HAF 932 adv

In BiOS OC and Linux bench tests run so far as follows:

4.5 GHz @ 1.238 vcore - up to 70°C max temp per core after 30 minutes, using Prime95 at default.
4.0 GHz @ 1.008 vcore - up to 55°C max temp per core after 30 minutes, using Prime 95 at default.

P.S.: My 6850K runs hotter, both VRM and CPU, just saying.

If you say so. (but in all honesty pre applied thermal paste is usually a terrible idea, my ryzen therm paste made a mess).

Freezing within system after multiple reinstalls, Adobe CC doesn't support advanced GPU rendering and crashes a lot more compared to Intel/SW, or nvidia, bad compatibility with M.2 drives, when using raid0/raid1 configurations and some more freezing with horrendous crashes when installing Crimson. Maybe had a bad piece, but as I wrote, not in this decade again.

@BuckGup the EK-XLC Predator 360? Best one on the market, makes everything else look like a pea shooter. Didn't try the 360 version of newest swiftech yet, so maybe that one stands on par. Xept Predator has a lot of bugs [bad threads, etc.]. Am waiting for the new rev. The X62/X52? Not that bad, but not for heavy wattage CPUs.

I had some mad love for AMD, when they presented Zen [Ryzen, Threadripper, Epyc], but it was all extinguished by tons of bugs I encountered :/. Replaced it for 7700k and TUF from Asus. I still hope for some miracle with Vega, but towards what we've seen with Frontier, I'm having my doubts...

Well, I feel like AMD has lower end CPUs cornered, but I think higher end will still be a hard fought battle. I'm rooting for Ayymd but its definitely good for the PC industry to see some serious competition to intel at all in general.

ryzen has actually gotten quite stable after some firmware upgrades from the motherboard manufacturers. Ryzen had some teething problems at launch, but that was 100% expected and the important part is how fast they are resolved (and it's been pretty good in that regard so far). 

 

The advice used to be to wait a bit on a new platform until the launch bugs got worked out unless you want to deal with said teething problems, but the platform differences on intels side have been really smooth the past few generations since the architecture hasn't changed much at all, so people have gotten used to have flawless launches.

 

Can't blame you for feeling frustrated though, so as long as you're happy with the end result that's what matters.

@reniat could be. I used it as a work rig, needed it functional and operational asap. Had my 90 days of "fun" and crazy tuning and all. But I couldn't simply handle it anymore.

P.S.: I'm aware of 7700k TiM problems, also 7900X, though, I still run them at full effeciency and proficiency [not the 7900X though, yet] and they work like charm. Can't help it. Intel is a bad, naughty and awfull kid, always trying to pee a little bit further, rendering it's customers totally debilitated in progress. I fully realize that and not only I realize the need of AMD on the market, I'm AMD fan, huge one. Though, the real life application plays still a prime at my life.

Great way to put it, if I may say so. Thats totally understandable, I think buying any hardware at launch, or anything really, is just a mistake if your expecting flawless launches.

Good to check. I see this alot on reddit and here too, some kids throwing an i9 into their minecraft rig without a GPU, OS, proper case, etc, and also not realising the game only benifits from single core.

One of the "real" problems I've encountered is, that my X99 Deluxe II doesn't support hw raid. Thus, I'm unable to use bitlocker. My data files are kind of sensitive case, well, at least for my clients. So a TPM + bitlocker combo is an imperative. Am running my raid array with VeraCrypt atm. but it's just way too buggy compared to Bitlocker. If I didn't have this issue, I wouldn't most likely succumb to X299.

Am using 3 Enterprise NVMe SSDs with my X99. All slots are 8x/8x/8x/8x and it's still great and only possible because of the additional controllers on this motherboard, which Asus provided. If I had some other type/brand of X99, I'd be left with 2 NVMe SSD drives tops most likely, or suffered from speed drops. One of those for sure.

I just confirmed the leaking, when I refilled mine with red [crimson concentrate] liquid [that was accidentally given to me by the shop I ordered it from, instead of the transparent one]. And it was a good thing. Now I have a proof for EK, and will replace it for the next gen. when it comes out with some nice discount. Or will take the X line of their water cooling sets and build it.
