ECC + Gaming

Go to solution Solved by grimreeper132,

ECC won't help you in gaming, and might slow you down slightly, but if you already have ECC in your system don't worry it'll be fine, it just means if you ever turn your PC into a NAS you have the correct RAM to do it, that being said I have 2 NASs running both with non ECC RAM and never had an issue, it's for only when you get to the enterprise level it's vital

ECC avoids small errors that make differences in gigantic statistics and simulations. You won't see a difference anywhere else. In fact, ECC will perform worse.

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

Guess I didn't understand what ECC was

Thanks

Would it be any kind of useful in "NAS" builds?

ECC memory is just fine. It can be just as fast as normal ram (contrary to popular belief). The downsides are that it usually runs a bit hotter, requires motherboard and cpu support, and can be more expensive.

Unless you have a reason to need it, normal ram is fine. Using ECC won't hurt your gaming performance though.

I have a couple NASes that could use it after they get rebuilt, and it wont seem out of place (but probably overkill)

I've never actually worked with ECC Memory before

It's no different to work with, just requires support from the other parts.

If you're building an older system (ddr3 based), used ddr3 ecc memory can be found for super cheap on ebay. My current rig is using 56 gigs of ddr3 ecc ram (supposed to be 64, but 2 of the sticks were bad) that I got for $64 with free shipping. 4GB sticks for $399 each. (I've got a dual xeon board with 24 ram slots)
