You don't really need an SSD, and that is way overkill for something that basic. Sure, it's future-proof (to an extent), but even a nicely equipped Core 2 Duo can do all that.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

That's better. Although a 1TB hard disk would be better for money.

I'm going to dispute this. I think every system should have an SSD. Using hard drives is like being in the dark ages.

Then again, I'm a supporter of the Chromebook idea! Think about it: Even if it doesn't meet your requirements in a couple of years, you can buy another one and still be better off than if you bought that system.

I edit my posts a lot.

In my opinion, this build could be about $400 (USD) quite easily.

Then make it $400

He needs to use Word. Chromebooks will not work.

He could use Google drive or Microsoft Onedrive which should be pretty much perfect. I'm not sure what functionality word has which would be useful to him.

However, it is a personal preference so you're entitled to your opinion. :)

Yes but this is homework, not low end gaming. A laptop can be taken anywhere whenever, cheaper, and just better overall for homework.

There's no point in getting better performance if OP's friend is just running word and google...

To sum some things up:

The build I provided (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Septimus/saved/Fg36hM) is a better solution than the original build, give or take a few components?

Consider getting a laptop. It can be taken wherever you want, can be plugged into a monitor and another keyboard and mouse and essentially used like a desktop.
