I am building 2 new systems (high-end and mid-level) for me and my wife with the time frame until early 2018 (so early 2018 I should have built the 2 of these).

High-end build will consist of the following:

  • i7 7700k
  • Strix z270e
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 1 x Strix 1080ti
  • RM750x PSU (acquired)
  • 460x RGB (acquired)
  • SSDs and HDDs (acquired)
  • h100i v2 (acquired)

and mid-level build for my wife consist of

  • ryzen 5 1600
  • a b350 motherboard
  • 16 GB RAM
  • gtx 1070
  • 460x RGB
  • 750x PSU

my dilemma here is which one to build first (just for us to have a functioning system).

I listed the parts that I have acquired as of posting this.

my first plan was to build the 7700k first but I read rumours about the upcoming coffee lake early this next year.

so maybe a good thing to do here is build the ryzen 5 first, right?and wait maybe intel will release a new flagship platform by early 2018?

or build the 7700k now and ryzen 5 later?

your thoughts will be highly appreciated.

thanks!

The way I see it, you base your purchasing decisions on the funds you have and time frame you wish to make the purchase. If you're playing the waiting game, you'll be waiting for ever. I'd simply amass the funds for the components and make my purchasing decision on what current availability is bar maybe factors such as imminent (like, within a month) releases or industry-wide shortages (like the cryptocurrency craze sapping GPUs).

if you build the R5 system get the 1080ti with it now since 1070s pricing is bonkers but the ti's is normal (for what it is) also remember to get 3000+ mhz ram that's been validated on your mobo of choice because ryzen loves that stuff. with coffee lake it sounds like intel is finally being pushed to release higher core count cpus, hard to really say with rumors...but if nothing else you should be able to upgrade the ryzen cpu with a release over the next few years if you want/need it, probably not the same story with intel

the ryzen build will probably serve me around 2-3 years or until it its functional, no plans of upgrading it since its for wife's gaming pc. im leaning towards building ryzen first and since im also saving funds for the high end build and maybe be patient and wait.

I would build ryzen and wait for coffee lake because I think Intel isn't having good times recently and I feel like they might launch the new platform earlier than we all expect.

probably will start with the ryzen, and wait what will intel brings to the table.
