hello everyone. i just built my first pc. i have a msi z170a motherboard. Im running a locked intel I5-6600. Its not the 6600k. the ram i got is some ddr4 corsair vengeance lpx at 3000 MHz. My ram is running at 2122 MHz. My motherboard has a xmp setting which puts my ram speed at 3000. If i do this, will it somehow overclock my locked cpu. I tried it once and it said my cpu was running at 3.6 ghz. It is supposed to be locked at 3.3ghz. Is it safe to run my ram at 3000 MHz? Or will this damage my cpu?

It is 1000000% safe to run your ram at those speeds. It will do nothing for your CPU or hurt it in any way, shape, or form. The Turbo on the i5 6600 is 3.9ghz and base clock is 3.3ghz, so you will always operate in those ranges during load.

You can unofficially overclock you CPU with that motherboard if you don't update your BIOS.

It was possible at least. So maybe you are lucky enough. Take a look at this:

And it's perfectly safe to run your ram at their target speed using XMP profile.
