linux virtual gaming

Greetings all

 

Looking to swap my windows systems over to maybe mint not sure yet

 

Anyone maybe have any advice on a virtual pc system whoch chould run on mint or a oyher distro which would allow me to grab hold of the phisical gpu and such and allow gaming ?

i havent gotten any of the games i play to run on Linux using things like Wine and PlayOnLinux. it just dosent work sadly(or i am too incompetent to get them to work even with google)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

If you mean to run Windows within Linux Mint with the dedicated GPU then you could use KVM to create a Windows VM (with GPU pass-through) but that is only if your CPU supports the required virtualization options. Otherwise you would have to run a hypervisor like XenServer/ESXi but that is a lot more work.

Well kvm think linus used something like that for the 8 gamers build ty ty willcheck around that a bit

Linus used unraid which most likely also uses KVM, but KVM can be installed on any Linux system. Just make sure you have a integrated GPU for your main OS.

you have to do quite a bit of homework on google to see if your hardware can have PCIe pass through, or you can just dive into it.

well diving in would be interesting and fun though first some more reading , its great since it will allow me to run a virtual pc for my gaming needs and then make for example mint my main OS

the best benefit is snap shots of the drive. give your os a seperate virtual drive from your games. You might find you get better drive performance on mdadm software raid than windows gets nativity, at least i do

yum yum time to download a few distro's and find one that I want to use as replacment OS for myself :) running my games on a VM would mean I can just leave my games on it and work normally , its going to be a good day :D
