I got a free computer and I am wondering if I can just upgrade the PSU and slap in a graphics card.

CPU: Intel Pentium 2.8 GHz E5500

MOBO: lenovo l-1g41m atx

RAM: 2x https://www.amazon.com/MICRON-MT16JTF51264AZ-1G6M1-DESKTOP-PC12800-512MX64/dp/B013EY9YJG

STORAGE: Western Digital Caviar Blue (Idk space amount)

GPU: (Need suggestions, Looking at used GPU's)

CASE: I cant find out

PSU:  Need suggestions

I want to play games like League, Rocket League and Overwatch at 1080p. I will put a photo of the case and will more than likely have to modify it to fit a gpu. If it cant game or there are more problems I would like to know. Thank you.

Does the PSU right now have a 6-pin PCI-e connector? If so, provided you're not going to by a high-end GPU, using that could last you until you upgrade.

Considering pc's struggle in rocket league with a Q6600 I doubt that'll be a very pleasant experience.

Even less so at Overwatch, I have a secondary PC that RUNS it with a Phenom x4 9560 at around 30 FPS. CPU being the bottleneck.

Settings in the absolute bottom of 1080p

For gaming? It'll be tough.

It would play LoL, anything plays lol. But I'd recommend a GPU in that case.

But basically any GPU today would be severely bottlenecked by that CPU.

If you want it to run LoL I wouldn't look for anything new, see if you can get an older GPU from the second hand market.

Get a cheap but non- fire hazardous PSU like the CXM series or that one from seasonic which name I can't remember for the life of me.

450-550w. COuld run on lower but what good is a 400w PSU.

I always see people saying how great CXM series PSUs are but I've used 3 in my life now and all of them have failed very soon

Sorry I meant to be more specific towards the Grey labeled ones.

The older Green ones are better for general use in day to day PC's.

Greens are not really recommended for gaming.

Damn, must've been a pretty low end ThinkStation then. If you're already thinking of upgrading later on, I would look for a PSU that you can use in your future build. So don't stick with the absolute minimum like an Earthwatts 350W.

That PC really isn't worth upgrading, the architecture is LGA 775 which by now is pretty useless unless you manage to get the extreme editions from back then.. But they're really not worth the cash.

Use what you have atm in that case, hold off.

I've used 2 green ones (one is currently in my PC (replacement for failed one), can't wait for it to go) and 1 grey one and they have all failed me

E5500 was honestly pretty decent back then, and things honestly didn't need more. :)

The only thing I would keep would be the GPU unless I can find a better one for cheaper

You seem like an unlucky fella, the grey ones are Teir 3, pretty decent PSU's. For gaming you shouldn't get anything "worse" imo.

Sorry for your losses(?)

That's why the system came with a meh PSU. Was designed for office use and not much more.

Why not find a better PSU and keep it? If you get a low wattage one, it's basically paperweight for you after you've upgraded since it probably won't have enough juice for your new machine.

I just feel i'm unlucky, used them and they all failed but I have used plenty of Antec's Basiq PSUs and they have worked 100%
