Fat Bike

I have been using a Trek Navigator for awhile now and it's sorta old and has gotten sloppy. My local bike center has a trade in program and I was looking at fat tire bikes due to their versatility. I do do a lot of on road biking though. But I also want to ride in the snow and on off road trails. Any suggestions?

Is the heaviness of the fat bikes like mongoose or polygon and some sort of "fatman naming" worth to use in the mentioned conditions?

These are a step above a "Bicycle Shaped Object" aka B.S.O. that are sold in department stores.

But I would actually look at good quality brands/models that are used. Not only do you save money, you also have money to put towards a proper setup and proper gear.

Fat Bikes are a waste of money and just another "FAD" in the bicycle industry in an attempt to gain more profit.

If I were the OP, I would have to look seriously and hard at if I wanted a hybrid cross between a road bike and a mountain bike, and the OP is leaning more towards having fun on the road. Or a mountain bike with 2 sets of wheels and leans more towards having fun on the trails. To me theres no difference in riding road or dirt, thats why I ride a mountain bike. I like walking pathways whether it be dirt or pavement. But I also like easy single track. Plus I dislike strictly road bikes and I'd say I ride 50/50. Road/Pathways&SingleTrack

 

BTW you can install a hybrid width rim & tire on a mountain bike when you are doing the 2 sets of wheels. In contrast to a mountain bike width rim & tire with a slick tire on it. Not too sure whats out there in terms of off the shelf setups, but I have laced a few rims and anything is possible. Even a Local Bike Shop aka LBS can lace you one up.

Cross Country Bicycle is a term that corresponds to Hybrid that is a cross betweeen a Mountain Bike and a Road bike.
