Don't have a PS4 just yet but doing my research on HDDs to upgrade once I pick up a PS4.

So I found specs that the PS4 HDD tray will take any laptop 2.5"HDD up to 12.5mm height.  I would love to install a VelociRaptor(10k RPM FTW) into the PS4 but its 15mm in height. Wondering if I cut out the top of the tray will the black shiny cover still fit? I think it would.

Could someone please measure the HDD black shiny cover plate height for me?

Also any idea about this would be great too.

Thanks

Don't know if you can. An SSHD would truly be great (once after caching the data) for the console. You might have to take a close looks at the tear down to see.

Do NOT put a VelociRaptor in the PS4. Put in an SSD or SSHD. The VelociRaptor pulls too much power for the PS4.

Seagate Hybrid Drives

idle: 1.1v

Read/Write: 2.7

VelociRaptor

idle: 4.2v

Read/Write: 5.1v

Most all laptop HDD Requirements are 8.5v between a 5v and 12v rail. Knowing Sony will not replease power brick spec I feel it's in the same spec as a laptop.

I have to do more research to see if the VelociRaptor will work. Maybe ask Linus to try it???

you can put whatever you want in it if you cut out the top bit... seems like a shame to do that though why not use a sata extender or something like that

i could use a extender but still will need to modd the area to fit the HDD.

How is it going to fit? VelociRaptor drives are 3.5" not 2.5". Save yourself the trouble and just use a larger capacity 5400RPM drive. In most cases even an SSD only saves you a couple of seconds over the stock HDD, so you're not going to notice the difference a 10000RPM drive will make.

VelociRaptor is a 2.5" drive and the laptop version doesn't come with the 3.5" heatsink mount that the 2.5" VelociRaptor is screwed to on the decktop version.

I have two VelociRaptors in two system I currently use. The differents is clear between 5400rpm drive vs 10k rpm but not earth shaking speed vs a SSD. I don't want a SSD due to all the reads and write it will be doing for the 10yr  life of the PS4 the SSD may fail way sooner them a HDD.
