Hi, I'm doing a itx build rn with an asrock z170m-itx/ac mobo with a zotac mini gtx 1070. I need a good affordable replacement for the originally planned i5 6600k because somehow everyone in my local stores think the newer i5 7500 is better at oc even though it can't oc (I think?). I'll mostly be using it for gaming and light workstation (program developing in apps and vr). Any suggestions that are around HKD$2000 (USD$250)? Any help would be appreciated thx!

Some mobos can be bios-mod to allow non-K overclock, but this is full of pain and I wouldn't recommend it.

Why can't you go 6600k? Out of stock now? 7600k is obvious replacement but I don't know about your regional pricing.

Have you bought parts already or is it still open? I'm sure someone will mention Ryzen...

I'm curious about case choice also... cooling a small ITX build is challenging.

Yes, you are correct.

Why does it bother you in your purchase what incompetent twats think?

EDIT: If you want a replacement what about a ryzen based system? There are not that many x399 ITX boards, i know :/

Depends on the hardware. I have an itx 6700k build that's OC'd to 4.4Ghz in a Fractal Core 500 and the temps are fine.

Edit: super tiny cases like the Node 202, yeah that would be harder haha

Agreed, I should have said it was more challenging, the smaller you go. I had a 6700k (fixed 4.2 GHz) and 1070 FE in a Silverstone SG13 at one point, and that took some tinkering to tame, then I moved it into a relatively huge NZXT Manta and RGB'd the life out of it. It also depends on your loading, I build all my desktop systems to be Prime95 stable 24/7 as that is representative of their winter running load. Gaming loads are less stressful in comparison.

I've already bought the mobo tho:( I planned on doing a r5 1600 build actually but then the stock temp is 50 and I'm doing a small case (Elite 110) so I opted for Intel.

7600k seems doable, it's around HKD$1800 here. But is it a good choice tho?

It bothers me when so many store owners has told me the same thing and I start to doubt myself haha
