probably, but I usually install avast on habit because I've been doing that for years.

I didn't use anti-virus for a LONG time. Started using Malwarebytes, but never really did any scans. Only installed Panda a week or so ago when I got it from the humble bundle (and it's pretty amazing.)

I only use Windows defender one two of my computers and have been just fine. For me it's not a huge issue of I get a virus because of would just reinstall windows. I haven't had any issues with virus yet. Just be smart and Windows defender should do the job.
