I bought some corsair ram (8gb X 4) and a motherboard that supports quad channel ram but the CPU I was going to buy (intel i5 7600k) said on intels website that the CPU only supports dual channal ram so does that mean my CPU won't even use half the ram I put into it or will I have to pay more money that I don't have right now and get a i7.

edit* it said that the intel i7 7700k also supports a max number of 2 ram channels so I clearly do know what a ram channal is so can anyone explain to me what it is

You can still put 4 stick of RAM in a dual-channel board BTW.

Ok thanks so much for clearing that up cuz other wise I would have wasted 200$ in extra ram I couldn't even use (it's expensive ram)

Also, if you are running an i5 instead of an i7 you probably won't need 32 GB of RAM, so if you wanted to save some money you could just get 2 sticks and leave two slots empty.

you really shouldnt buy anything faster then 3000 MHZ ram, even 2666 would have been more then enough. There just is so little gain from buying the faster ram, its better for more of it.

Original question : Yes you can use 4 sticks instead of 2 and it will work.

You're fine then. Your quad kit will still work in dual channel. I would consider returning the kit unless you do work that requires 32GB.

I got it on sale for about 70$ less then what's showing plus this is a higher MHz model so they charge a bit more. I didn't pay nearly as much as what's showing

Don't buy the i5 you will regret it in the long run, grab a 7700k or if u need something cheap right now get a g4560 then swap it out.
