He wants the CPU to be as fast as possible and have the option to upgrade the GPU in 6 months or so

Gaming is kind of the secondary focus for him so I thought a nearly 4.0 CPU and a basic GPU to start with would be a good starting point

I agree. The extra threads will do wonders for gaming and other things.

I hope you realize that the G4560 has the same amount of logical cores.

If he needs more performance, he should consider going down to the G4560 to put the money elsewhere or going up to a quad-core like an i5 or i7 since both the G4560 and i3-7100 are 2P/4L or dual-core with HT.

Should aim for at least 4 cores imo.

We don't know what workloads the friend is using. If it's Photoshop/LR, he's pretty much fine and can put the cash towards RAM. If he's using Autodesk, the G4560 and 1050 TI would be the better match until he can afford an i5 or non-HT hexa-core since the program won't use logical cores during real-time editing and movement.

@bdphxdudeIf this is solely a gamong rig, the G4560 would be very comparable to the originally proposed i3 while the 1050 Ti would provide much more power in said gaming.

He's saying that he's going to be doing much more than gaming but I don't know exactly what that entails so I'm comfortable going with the i-3

Thing is that the i3 and Pentium get the same performance in nearly any situation. If the Pentium stutters, the i3 will stutter. If he's doing CAD work, the Pentium will work just as well.

All in all, the i3 should be skipped in favor of the Pentium or i5.
