2500k upgrade help

Hello,

I currently have

i5 2500k OC to 4.3Ghz with a hyper 212x cooler

and

980ti G1 Gaming

I game at 4k mainly one a 60hz monitor. I usually get the frames i want so am happy with that. Getting extra frames would be nice too, i just dont want to lose any.

I also do video editing on it so going extra cores would help a lot too.

I am debating upgrading to a ryzen 5 1600. But this would cost me around $750 NZD to upgrade.

My other option is getting a cheap i7 2600 that i can overclok up to 4ghz. I know the non K skus dont go any higher no matter what.

Will i be losing frames do you reckon with this. Is it worth the upgrade?   Cost around $75 NZD

Or can find 2600k , Cost $150 NZD.
or maybe a ivy bridge i7 .. but will be more.  This is all in order to keep my z68 motherboard.

and yes i will be keeping a look out for other used hardware but  thats all thats available at this moment.

so to recap :

R5 1600 inc mobo and 16gb ram  = $750

i7 2600 = $75

i7 2600k = $150

Any advice would be awesome. Please back up opinions more than just because its newer or because its AMD / Intel

the ryzen would be better than any of the intel upgrades you have mentioned. i seriously wouldnt bother buying another 2nd gen intel, save up and get a ryzen 1600.

Well I mean getting a 2600/k would save a lot of money, but R5 would be better by quite a lot. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-2600-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/620vs3919. Have you thought about maybe selling your 2500k, ram, and mobo, that could help a bit.

Well, if you were strictly gaming, the 2600K / 2700K is still a pretty viable choice, but no doubt the Ryzen is faster overall. It's just the high cost of DDR4 at the moment making it hard to justify a whole new platform.

I kind of went the cheap route and bought a 2700K for $130 USD last summer despite like a lot of people telling me to get a 7700K...and it multitasks and games well at 4.9 GHz OC. But since you're video editing / encoding / rendering, the six cores of the Ryzen would help a lot. If you were just gaming, I'd just say go with a used 2600K / 2700K (Or ivy bridge if you can find any deals...I couldn't. The 3770K still goes for $200+ for some reason...). And now my old 2500K just sits on my desk questioning life.

Definitely hard to judge for sure, no doubt the 2600K is the bang for the buck when overclocked, but overall the Ryzen would be considerably faster for multithreaded stuff.

How about a 6 core Xeon that'll fit your motherboard?

Black Knight-

I don't think that exists

I don't think the 2600 is worth it. I would get the i7 2600k if you want a cheap upgrade. It's also worth mentioning that your ram speed is also probably a bottleneck unless u have 2133mhz ddr3 kit.

So really this is all a question of time. If you want a fast upgrade then get the i7. If you have time to wait and save then get a modern platform.

Quite sure it does. I'll research Intel Ark after work.

Bummer, I could have swore there were 6 cores. Couldn't find any though. You could get a 4C/8T Xeon E3-1240 v2 for $95.
