Should I upgrade CPU?

I recently bought a PC that was sitting in someones closet for 60$, it would have been 50$ but i paid the dude an extra 10$ to drive it to me.

Intel i7 950

Nvidia GTX 670 (Msi power edition)

corsair gs800 psu

12 gb corsiar dominator ram

2hdds

evga x58 classified e770

enermax uber chakra case

No ssd, stock cooler, and a case with very little fan mounts. I just ordered a Lepa AIO on ebay for 60$ as the temps are terrible at stock speeds with a stock cooler.

Question is should i upgrade to a xeon X5680 and overclock, or just overclock this i7 950. Lastly should I also just wait a few months till i can afford and get a Xeon x5690 instead (extra 120$ vs 5680)?

CPU: Intel Xeon X5690 @4.4GHZ; Motherboard: EVGA x58 Classified 3 E770; RAM: 12 GB Corsair Dominator; GPU: Nvidia GTX 980Ti; PSU: Corsair CX-M 650W; Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Chroma; Mouse: Razer Deathadder 3.5g

What are you doing on your computer? Do you really need that upgrade?

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Gaming, streaming, and plan on video editing. I do plan on upgrading gpu (maybe 960 or if i can find deal on 970), also getting an ssd in a month. Considering the cpu is only 3.07 stock, I'm not sure how far I can overclock.

That awkward moment someone buys a better pc then your main pc for 50 bucks. *cries in 550ti*

It was an amazing deal, it was very neglected I spent 3 days cleaning dust, dirt, and bugs out of this thing.

I was also very inspired by scrapyard wars.

I posted some videos with an x5680 and gtx 960 a few days ago. Look through my profile and you should find them.

I can't speak for the 950, but at $70 the X5680 kicks ass.

The X5690 is only 130Mhz faster, not worth the $120 you claim (only $44USD difference on ebay).

X5680 is 270Mhs faster than the i7.

Both Xeons offer 288GB RAM support VS 24 for the i7.

Both Xeons offer 2 more cores and 8 more threads.

All three CPUs are 130 TDP, with both Xeons drawing .25v less than the i7.

Indeed, I'd say it's better than my Ryzen processor for games at the moment. (Gotta bring Ryzen into the convo ;))

I'd say go with whatever your budget can get, or save some bucks by putting that towards a better GPU, especially if it's for gaming, if not, and you need an upgrade for the CPU, by all means get what you can.

Thank you very much for all the videos and help. after you mentioned price difference and went an looked again and found a cheaper x5690 for only the 44$ difference. Looks like ill be getting a x5690.

I don't know how long you plan on keeping that, but take decent care of it.  Looking on ebay you could probably sell that motherboard alone for a minimum of $100.  This is definitely one of those cases where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.  So don't bend any pins :)

I will keep my current PC until it is no longer useful. It my become a 2nd machine but as long as it runs current programs I will hang on to it and treat it well.

I run all my games at 60FPS locked with Vsync, or ingame settings, so it doesn't matter to me which one is "better" overall, as no matter what, provided the CPU is not a bottleneck for the game (My Ryzen won't be for any game I can play today.) Then my GPU will be the #1 limiting factor in framerate, running 80 - 90 frames max in battlefield 1 for example, on either latest intel or AMD atm.

The OP would benefit from the Xeon's, as I assume they are cheaper than Ryzen, without the upgrade-ability, or "New" factor. Which aren't too worrysome for those who can wait 4+ years and save for a new system anyway.

This RAM won't work unfortunately. I bought the same RAM for my Sabertooth. The Sabertooth supports unbuffered/unregistered ECC RAM, but not the registered/buffered ECC. I'm sure your mobo is the same case.

I Run VSYNC on a 60hz 1080p monitor normally, but I had access to a 1440p 144Hz monitor for this test.
