Looking for low end VM linux

I recently got a dual monitor setup for my low end computer and am currently trying to run a virtual machine on the other monitor so me and my friend can do things at the same time.

I was thinking windows xp because it is very easy to run.But now I am looking for a low end linux distro for my VM

Thanks!

Please don't argue with me, I am just trying to help, or be helped. (we are all humans right?)

What os is the host running?

You want multipoint here, not vms. This is supported in windows server, and linux with some tweaking in X.

I am running OSX and am thinking of using the VM in the other monitor fullscreen.

Tell me more about multipoint!

Doing 2 users with vms is a pain and normaly not well suupported.

Multipoint lets you have multiple users on one computer with seprate screens, keyboard and mice.

You can try virtual box in osx(any os will work here, please don't run xp) then give it the second keyboard and mouse with usb passthrough and full screen it.

I was just wondering if any distros had lower sys requirements.

Hehe, fair call dude.

Yeah if you want windows go for 7, it's plenty low end enough and isn't prone to a virus a 5 year old could make :P

You can bump down the graphics on it and then it's pretty easy to run. Careful on you're CPU though, what sort of mac you have? If it got a core 2 duo I'd not be doing this...

I have dual core duos at 3.06 GHz and 16GB of RAM.

Interesting. You should be fine then, but be prepared to each have a system from 2009 while VMing. (2009 apple products ran single duos at 2.53Ghz on 8GB, they still keep up today as long as you have an SSD for the OSD)

id just try ubuntu, get something common.

THe distros use very little cpu and ram to run, you have more than enough system power. THe distro doesn't determine how much cpu and ram you use, its what your doing in that vm. Windows 7 will also work well

If you had less RAM I would recommend something like Lubuntu.

However you have a shit ton of ram and a dual core this means you can run anything.

On a multicore machine there is no noticeable difference between the desktops.

Heres a assumption some people have that they can speed up their laptop with a lightweight desktop but I have tried it and I think most peoples complaints could be directed at Firefox's performance, which sucks on all distributions & platforms.

Phoronix.com does do performance comparisons between the different distributions if you are interested, you can google it, or you can take my word for it that Ubuntu has a slight performance advantage in some tests and Suse has a slight advantage in others.

Just so you know, the distro itself isn't the biggest factor in what the minimum requirements are. It's the desktop environment (DE) you choose. Use XFCE, LXDE or LXQt if you want something light weight, but with a GUI. If you're fine with just a terminal, just get the server version of any major distro. Some distros like Arch and Gentoo don't even come with a DE by default.
