Hello forum. I need some help. My brother's PC had some issues with windows 7, which I'm not going to explain. We decided to install Windows 10 to try and fix things. We couldn't launch the setup program from windows, so we had to use a USB and everything and all files were deleted. Eventually, we were meet at the windows 10 desktop. Everything works fine except for one problem. Windows 10 isn't activated. I had a product key written down, but I lost it. I need a product key, and I don't want to buy a cheap non-legit key. I also can't fork over 200 dollars to Micro$oft. Please help.

There no such thing as a "cheap non-legit key" Keys are either legit or not a real key. No harm will come of using an OEM key. Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with HRK, I just use them all the time with no issues.

Try the Win7 key anyway. There have been reports that Win10 has been activating with those, and I have done it once myself recently. You might need to make sure the 7 and 10 are the same type e.g. both Pro. If you need to, there is a generic key you can find that converts Win10 from Home to Pro. This only changes the version type, and does not activate it.

You can spend some time with MS customer service. You might need an invoice from where ever you got your license. Dont tell them you lost the key, just say your key on your OEM label doesnt work. If you tell them you lost the key there is a 50% chance they will not help you. I say 50% because they dont train their staff properly. If they ask you for the key on the label tell them its worn - hard to read and just make up 25 random numbers and letters. They're not dickheads, but they do have rules, you just have to tick the right boxes for them to help you.

And have about 3 hours to waste before you're either successful or not.
