Posted June 27, 2017 I was a PC user for 7 years & switch to laptop in this January and I'm so loving it. With a good monitor I can build a great laptop setup and it is so convenient. And you should mention the budget as members here will try give you good options with best price : value ratio. According to my knowledge tablet market is dominated by android and a bit by IOS, win tablets market share is very low so if he is having a tablet it might be IOS or android as he is hacing windows pc already. Posted June 27, 2017 Not playing games on the go (EDIT: Maybe just becasue i can't Might be chicken and egg thing). LAN parties have fallen of grace, and coming from a gt540m playing BFBC2 a gtx770 was a magical upgrade. Only being able to watch other people play when I am on holiday is infinitely painful though thinking about getting an XPS 15 9560. I would only really buy it to have something more fun to work with than the garbage HP ProBook 650 that I am currently typing on druing my economics lecture + some gaming power on the go but the laptop prices are just to outrageous compared to their perfromance if this is just a 'want'-upgrade. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/334934-unofficial-ltt-beginners-guide/ (by Minibois) and a few things that will make our community interaction more pleasent:1. Posted June 27, 2017 Comparing Desktops and laptops is like comparing an apple and an orange, they are two entirely separate things (yes they can both run programmes but they are entirely different) Desktops are for two main situations, situation 1 is for people who need power, wither of a fully clocked 7700K (yes I think there is laptops with that CPU but I will get onto that in a moment if I remember) or a 6 core+ (yes again I know they are coming but shush they anit here yet, and it doesn't sound like they will be overclockable and there isn't a 10 core+ coming so shush that won't happen for a while) this power is needed for tasks like CAD modeling/simulation, heavily multithreaded tasks, heavily single threaded tasks (as a 7700K is about 40% faster than it's laptop equivalent) or gaming (more on that in a sec) Situation 2 is cost, a desktop costs a hell of a lot less than a laptop, as a laptop costs more than a desktop https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834861167 i5 quad core, with a 1050 4GB or you could build this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gkRwbj R5 quad core, which is faster (65% on multi threaded, and 13% on single) double the RAM slightly better graphics, good PSU, good board with overclocking. Laptops are for one main task and that is people who need portability and they are very good at that, but they aren't as powerful and when they are (thinking of some of the over the top SLI 1080 systems) they might as well be desktop as they are about as potable as a desktop in size weight, hell some even come with suticases, laptops and desktops are entirely different for entirely different purposes you can't compare them The owner of "too many" computers, called The Lord of all Toasters (1920X 1080ti 32GB) The Toasted Controller (i5 4670, R9 380, 24GB) The Semi Portable Toastie machine (i7 3612QM (was an i3) intel HD 4000 16GB)' Bread and Butter Pudding (i7 7700HQ, 1050ti, 16GB) Pinoutbutter Sandwhich (raspberry pi 3 B) The Portable Slice of Bread (N270, HAHAHA, 2GB) Muffinator (C2D E6600, Geforce 8400, 6GB, 8X2TB HDD) Toastbuster (WIP, should be cool) loaf and let dough (A printer that doesn't print black ink) The Cheese Toastie (C2D (of some sort), GTX 760, 3GB, win XP gaming machine) The Toaster (C2D, intel HD, 4GB, 2X1TB NAS) Matter of Loaf and death (some old shitty AMD laptop) windybread (4X E5470, intel HD, 32GB ECC) (use coming soon, maybe) And more, several more Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/799268-pc-or-laptop/#findComment-10055366 Share on other sites
