[Question] Upgrading RAM

Go to solution Solved by Giddyguy,

If your system can only support 16gb, then it doesn't really matter which configuration you use. I would say look at which is cheaper 4x4 or 2x8. from what ive heard, quad channel doesn't make much of a difference over dual channel even though there is supposed to be better bandwidth.

My question to you is, why do you need 16gb ram? You could just add another 2gb stick and make it 8gb, which i think should be enough. THat would be the cheapest solution.

Hi guys, I'm fairly new to the DIY computer and upgrading so I just wanted to ask something.

I'm using the Acer Predator G5910. It has 4 memory slots (DDR3) and I currently have 6GB RAM on a 3 x 2GB configuration. Would it make sense for me to upgrade my system and go for 2 x 8GB or use all 4 slots and go with 4 x 4GB configuration? Or would it not make a difference at all?

You should go for the 2x8GB so in case you need more memory in the future, you can add 2 more 8GB DIMMS.

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

Forget about the bad memories of the past, take the good ones along with you through the present, and look forwards to the good things that will come in the future.

It would be better to run either 2 DIMMs or 4 DIMMs in order to take advantage of dual channel mode. There is hardly any difference in performance between filling 2 slots and filling 4 slots. I would personally go with the 2x8GB config.

My system only support a maximum of 16GB of RAM so yea.

what chipset is the motherboard basedon? unless its x79 its better to use two stick(for dual channel). If its x79 use 4 sticks. (for quad channel)

I think it's Intel P67?

Would this help to identify it?

Thanks for the quick reply to the rest :)

Yea I was thinking it wouldn't really make much of a difference but just wanted to make sure. The reason why I wanted to upgrade my system was because of the Black Friday deal on Amazon. And I found this Crucial Ballistix Sport to be relatively cheap for 16GB, which was why the question of "Is there a difference between 4x4 or 2x8?" popped in my mind in the first place.

I guess 8GB would be sufficient and would definitely be cheaper but compare to the 16GB deal that I found, I'd go with the 16GB one.
