I know in Europe, in certain regions you can get like weekend or a few days courses/primers/workshops.  I've had fellow editors take these workshops to catch up on what's new in AE and Premiere if they've been using very old versions or if they've migrated from another tool.  Some of them certify, others don't.

 

Lynda offers courses for AE, and I'm sure you can find other courses online or training DVD/Videos/Streaming/Downloads.
