you cannot just change the speed and get 1gbps internet

if the cable that enters the NIC is 100mbps there's nothing you can do to make it 1gbps - some 100mbps cables aren't even wired with all pairs; 1gbps needs all 8 wires, 100mbps uses only 4

Your network card is capable of 1gbps ... but the device at the other end of the cable also has to be capable of 1 gbps. If your cable modem or router has only 100mbps ethernet ports, then the maximum speed will be 100mbps.

Ethernet cables have 8 wires, but they also have to wired properly at both ends in order to transfer at up to 1 gbps. Usually this is not a problem, but rarely and especially if cables are made by hand instead of being bought from store ready made, the wires can be arranged in the connectors the wrong way for 1 gbps.
