I having an i7 7700hq with gtx1050 2GB and 8gb DDR4. I like to monitor my hardware while playing games and I noticed that games like W_D_2 and Arkham knight are using 6.5GB RAM but pages files or virtual ram usage goes all the way upto 8.5 to 9 GB I think which clearly indicates that my system lacks RAM. In order to check whether I am right or wrong I turn off Virtual RAM and find that Ram usage goes all the way upto 7.8 GB with an improved performance (not like high fps but in terms of stability, fps are less fluctuating) but my system crash due to lack of RAM. Then I put my Virtual RAM to 1.5GB only so that game use more RAM then paging file, run games again with Razor Game Boost but this time I shutdown each and every process including explore (except Afterburner to monitor) which gave me upto 700mb of free memory and performance was also good. So should I upgrade my RAM, will it help me to get stable fps.

I think that an addition of 4GB RAM will do the work, afterall I am not keeping this system forever, the only thing I want is maximum comfortable output untill new cpu-gpu architectures comes out.

I had this same issue with GTA V when I used to play it with 8 GB. What would happen is the usage would fluctuate between 6.5GB to 7GB when I was playing it. I ended up getting dual channel 16GB's of ram to fix this issue and have been fine ever since. You definitely should upgrade because 8GB is kind of the starting point for a build, there's always room for improvement.

Well I hate to say this, but Arkham Knight is the shittest PC port in modern history and you really shouldn't play it on PC unless you get a very substantial discount, even then it's buggy as all hell. So, lower your expectations there, upgrading your RAM won't fix things in that "game".

Regardless, did you suffer from stutter from WD2 before turning off paging? If not your safe. Also, please don't play  with paging, guaranteed crashes even at low RAM usage based on my experience.

I don't think that was an issue unless you used to suffer from some lag of sorts, I doubt that GTA V needs more than 8GB.

@Castdeath97 It really doesn't, but when you have a lot of background applications running at the same time you're playing GTA V, it adds up. I was rubber banding or freezing to the point where it made the game almost unplayable until I upgraded some stuff.

If you have a load of memory hogging background applications, yeah for sure. But, I would be more worried about those background processes!

Yes W_D_2 is stuttering like a hell, I even overclocked my gpu from 1354Mhz to 1500Mhz but no positive outcome

Do you have any background processes using a significant resources? Double check temperatures as well and make sure drivers are updated. What percentage of percentage of physical memory did it use? Check task manager.

Avast Free antivirus, Flux and MSI Afterburner ( Only during gaming ) are always running and rest is default system processes. While gaming, RAM usage is about 80% to 85% with default paging file size of 3840. With 1900 MB paging Ram usage hits 90%.

Hey Castdeath97 I am currently using Win10 pro. I was woundering whether downgrading to Win8.1 or to Win7  can reduce RAM usage.

90%? Hmm, I would assume it would try to use more before it stutters.

No.

Try checking the CPU/GPU temperatures and reinstalling graphic drivers just to be sure.

By the way according to Ubisoft themselves WD2 recommended RAM is 8GB, so it really shouldn't need 16GB.

Here's what I think, if a game's recommended system requirements is 8gb ram that means a complete 8gb of free ram. In a system with overall 8gb ram almost 1 to 2 gb is reserved by the OS and other programs only.

Official hardware requirements to run any Windows OS right from 7 to 10 is as follows...

Processor:1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
RAM:1 GB for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
Hard disk space:16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS
Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later

So if a system with overall 8gb ram can give upto 6.5gb of ram as a max to any program to utilize while rest 1.5gb it keep for OS.

I think that every budget gamer should have atleast 10gb of ram to run latest aaa titles.

Plus as per Linus if someone have low vram, lower than that of game's actual requirement than the amount is compensated by ram. And infact a clear example for this is GTA 5 while exceeding vram limit a clear increase in ram usage can be noticed.

So if someone consider vram compensation also then clearly 10 gb of ram is required for modern titles plus 2gb for the survival of OS.

The minimum is 6GB, so this pretty much ruins your theory, sorry :(

No bro minimum 6gb for those who play game on 720p low. Infact you can check this thing with any game, for example GTA 5 minimum sys requirement is 1gb vram and 4gb ram, play it on 720p with every settings to lowest or off and monitor your resource usage. Also if you google out or see trusted channel videos on YouTube regarding 8gb vs 16gb ram you will notice that the game will utilize more ram in 16gb system though no fps gain. The advantage of having more ram can be seen as stability of fps and not gain of fps, also quick loading and almost no stuttering.

I don't know whether I am right or wrong but it is simple logic.

Low Vram-->high ram utilization=fps drop

Low Ram-->high paging=fps drop

Low Paging files memory-->System unstablity=crash

Bro on PC everything require Ram to keep working even OS.

Hmm strange, how can you use 2600MB of vRAM if your card has only 2048MB?

Maybe thats the problem?

Hey bro I added 4gb ram in my laptop and now game is maintaining 46fps at 1080p with my settings. And ram usage is exactly 8gb or 8130 mb with extra 1gb paging

It's still eating a lot of RAM however.
