My upcoming build will be

- i5 4670k CPU

- h80i

- ASUS maximus hero V

- 1 SSD, 1 HDD, 1 Optical Drive, 1 wireless card (PCI-E x1 card)

-  R9 280x video card

- LEDs

I was thinking of 650w. Does that gives me some headroom or I should opt for 750w?

650W would be more than enough to power this system.

650W will be sufficient but you'll need more to Crossfire.

650w if you're staying with a single card.

opt for a 750 just to be sure :) + room for upgrades

What can I add more instead of a GPU with 650w? Could I possibly add 2-3 HDDs and still be okay?

Absolutely. HDDs barely take power.

You could add like 6 HDDs and be fine.

Alright. I don't plan to crossfire but could future cards require way more power than today? Because I am probably getting a Corsair HX which has a 7 year warranty, so I will be having the PSU for a couple of time.

Nobody knows. NVIDIA will most likely have less power consumption, but it's not certain.
