4k or Ultrawide?

Kouroshb26

I want to get a new display.

Right now I have 2 1080p monitors (22 in) side by side. It works pretty well but I am starting to do colour grading work and wanting a better display to consume movies. I have always thought about 4k, but a ultrawide would be pretty nice as well. I have lots of desk space so having two monitors is not really a problem (not even a problem with 3 displays. I was also thinking of keeping one of the 1080 p monitors as it has fast response rate and keep the other for content consumption.

Futures I am looking for: (in order of importance)

IPS --> Color accurate display, and wide range of colours  (Just want to be immersed in the pictures, video)
Roughly 25 (+- 2) inches in screen size for 4k, something that is the same height for an ultra wide (Roughly 32-36 inches).
Port would be great as I have a lot of peripherals

The refresh rate is not too much of a concern. Probably the highest would be 120.

The response rate is not really a concern but would be good if it is low.

Curved or not curved does not matter. (If you disagree please let me know)

Don't care about rotate adjustments

Don't care about speakers AT ALL

Budget is up to 500-700 $CAD

I plan to watch movies on the ultrawide (Is it a good idea?). I want the new monitor I get for mostly content consumption + creation.

Watching movies on an ultrawide would not make me feel immersed because you'll have some really wide polar-boxed bars but that's just me

Now that he mentions it I've never stopped to think that ultrawides have a messed up aspect ratio

Especially if your doing editing in Premier Pro or FCP X, an ultrawide will let you see way more of your timeline. Though a 4K screen will let you preview 1080p content at full res and still have space for the rest of your workflow. For the middle ground, I'd get a 1440p ultrawide, at least a 34" if you can afford it. Much less than 25", and it is too short vertically for productivity.

What?  not messed up, better.

Most ultrawides are IPS and a lot have amazing greyscale/color reproduction as well

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Should I go one ultra wide and on the edges two 1080p Monitors? Too Overkill? Maybe one?

well i thought since most stuff is made for 16 by 9, it would look stretched out on a ultrawide. Since I don't own one I can't really talk out of experience, really. Sorry for the assumptions ._.

I own both, I did not like the 4k at 28" windows scaling was buggy (some applications don't scale at all or some are blurry) at first I ran it native but after a few 8 hour days it hurt my eyes. IMO a 1440p 34" monitor is the sweet spot. Pair it with a similar dpi 1080 monitor in portrait mode and it is awesome.

Guys, most movies are made in 21:9. Ultrawides are DESIGNED for extremely immersive movie watching.

I've got a bit of experience  (borrowed one)  In terms of gaming it isn't stretched, you just get way more peripheral vision/FOV

90% of games and basically 100% of modern ones support 21:9. Payday 2 supports it and it is 4 years old.

I guess the monitor adapts to the game then, I saw a guy do 3 monitors for csgo and the whole ui was overlapping. Then again I'm pretty stupid for comparing multi-monitor configs to a ultrawide monitor

21:9 gets my vote for pretty much anything. If you're only using MS Word, ultrawide. Console gamer, ultrawide. 3DS? 3DUW.

Seriously, you might have black bars on the side for some films, but the added depth and view is amazing, though I'll be sticking with triple monitors for a while longer.
