Infamous series. Questions.

So I was wondering which Infamous game I should pick up on PS4. I haven't played The ones on PS3 I couldn't afford it back then and I got my PS4 this year.

Do the games have any direct continuity or could I just play Second Son and/or First light and will I have the same experience as those who played the original 2 games ? 

 

I really feel like playing the games but, I'm not sure if i want to spend money and not have a good background about the story.

i believe second son has a different story, but they do tie in with Cole's story from time to time.
