I got my new build, with specs:
Mobo: Asus Z270 Tuf Mark 2
CPU: i7 7700k

Ram: Patriot Viper Elite 2666mhz

GPU: Evga gtx 1080 SC

Case: Corsair 400c

Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H110i

SSD/HDD: Samsung 850 Evo/Seagate Hybrid HDD 2TB

two 120mm corsair quiet edition fans on top, radiator in the front of the case fans facing out(not facing towards the mobo), back fan is the one came with the case

I did overclocked the gpu successfully on +100mhz/+350mhz (core/memory), and using xmp at 2666mhz. However, when overclocking the cpu I have trouble. It's being very hot even on 4.6 ghz.

I clocked it 4.6 with 1.25 manual vcore, LLC level 4, disabled SVID support.

The temps rise to almost 90c after playing games like overwatch, not even very long, probably like an hour or two, during the hot summer day time.

Is there anyway to bring the temps down? Something wrong with the system? I re-applied Arctic Silver 5 this morning to the cooler but doesn't help much.

This is the info read in HWMonitor

this cpu has became notorious for being hot i would suggest delidding like i am

I would recommend against this... You probably lost on the silicon lorrery.. RIp gg.

Also maybe try to reseat the CPU cooler, and use some nice thermal paste.

I did it already before i post this thread, this morning I re-applied thermal paste, Arctice Silver 5, and this is the result

4.6GHz is quite low for 1.25v, either you have a bad a chip or a bad mount, I can do almost 5GHz on 1.25v. Try checking the mount and that you don't have any restrictive fan curves.

Yours faithfully

What do you mean by restrictive fan curves? And what kind of tools do you use to check if lowering the voltage is still good for it? I kinda just do cinnebench and use cpu-z to stress for an hour or two

And also, what voltage do you recommend?

If you hit 90c at 4.6... dont go for 4.7, think dude...

no, look at reviews of the 7700k they throttle horrible and get temps all the way up to 90c delidding drastically changes it

I don't really stress test after I already characterised the chip, for that I used AIDA64. I mean do you have the pump and fan on 100%, a custom fan curve that favours temps or one that favours acoustics. Try setting it to full bore.

Yours faithfully

pump is on performance profile. setting the cooler fan to 100% didn't drop the temp by a lot. And it's pretty loud too...

Well, try IC Diamond, Antec Formula 7 or Thermal Grizzly Kyronaught, they're about the best compounds and a remount of the cooler, however it just looks like either the cooler is defective or you got a really bad really hot chip.

As for the voltage any suggestion/idea?

Well, keep doing down until it isn't stable then add 50 millivolts to that, 100 if you wanna be sure, maybe delid the chip is you have large balls (I did and yeah, the temps went down)

i don't have aida 64 lol is cpu-z's one good? Or any other for stability test?

Well, AIDA64 tests the cache, core and FPU, so it's a pretty extreme test in that regard, but it isn't so random as some others, prime95 but what out for AVX, some users reported the AVX voltages went to like 1.5v (extreme overclockers run our systems at that daily lol, no ragrets) but I never saw that and you have manual voltage so it should be fine, CPU-Z test is more of a lighter one but it's still good.

Yours faithfully

I just went down to 1.2V, and downloaded the trial version of aida64. How long would u run the stability test for? I just ran for 15min til now, and the cpu's temps are maxing at 84c. Av is about high 60's.

Apparently after I disabled xmp the temps went down. However, realbench will crash on luxmark, but I had no problem when stress testing and benchmarking my gpu. Currently I'm running x264 infinity loop 16Threads normal priority for whole night. If I pass can I just call it stable? Or I should run aida64 for another night? Also I'm on 4.7ghz currently, and running for an hour already temps are below 80c
