So the new vega gpu's are coming out soon and i was wondering whether to wait to see if they are affordable and good in performance, or just buy the Gigabyte RX580 AORUS XTR 8GB?

Vega isn't a replacement for the 580, it's a replacement for the Fury X. Vega is going to be an equivalent to the 1070 and up, and so should have no bearing on your decision to buy a 580. Or 1060, more realistically thanks to miners.

It depends what you mean by "mid-range". Mid range by 2017 standards, no. The 580 was only just released, why would they supersede it within a couple of months?

 

That being said, AMD is offset by Nvidia by at least half a generation. Vega is not going to be replaced until at least halfway through Volta's lifetime, so what will be upper mid Vega now will inevitably be mid-range later on.

1030 - overpriced low end (not really good for anything)

1050 / 1050 ti - low end (when buying a graphics card actually improves something)

1060 / 1070 - mid range (now we're talking)

excuse my ignorance, but i don't really know wich AMD cards would be performance equivalent to any given tier so i just didn't bother including them. same with quadro and radeon pro cards.

You misunderstand me. Vega is going to stay on sale into Volta's tenure, meaning cards will depreciate a tier. For example, the (Hawaii) 290X was a top tier card. The 390X (the exact same card) was a high but not top end card. Or the Fury X (Fiji) was a top end card, but now it's an upper mid (1070 equivalent).

As of right now (pre-Vega) this is correct.

 

What I am saying is that Vega's 1080 equivalent is going to be released more than a full year after the 1080 itself. Therefore I am expecting Navi (Vega's replacement) to be released well after Volta. Therefore I would expect top end Vega to start off competing with top end Pascal, but eventually it will find itself competing with mid-tier Volta.
