When I try to overclock my ram to anything above 2133mhz, it boots into safe mode saying it is due to instability issues. No matter what frequency or voltage i set it at, it boots like that. I really want to overclock my ram as it is rated to 3200mhz and im using a ryzen 5 1600 which benefits from fast memory.

I am using an asus x370 prime pro mobo and corsair vengeance LED DDR4 3200mhz 16gb.

are you on the latest BIOS?

yes I am.

Damn.

Maybe try pumping a bit more voltage through your IMC?

@MageTank is playing around with Ryzen overclocking right now, so maybe he can give your some tips. it should be able to at least go to 2666 or something.

do you by any chance have Ripjaws V 3200Mhz CL15?

I only have the corsair 16gb 3200mhz ram kit and I've tried setting it at 2400mhz but the same happenes

That's a pretty good kit of RAM. it should be able to run at 2966 at least.

No matter what I do it only runs at default 2133mhz.

That is odd. Tell me, what bios revision are you using? I know you said the latest, but I need to know if that has the AGESA 1.0.0.6 update or not. As for what you need to do, dial in vDIMM voltages (DRAM Voltage) to 1.35-1.4. I personally use 1.39v. These values are perfectly safe. Next, look for your SoC voltage, and set it at 1.05-1.1v. This too is perfectly safe, and will help make your ram stable in rare circumstances.

Next, manually dial in your timings from your XMP/SPD table, and leave ram frequency at 2133. Once you've dialed in the timings, save and reboot into BIOS. Slowly increase your memory frequency one stepping at a time. Once you get around to 2933, 3066, and 3200, you may need to play with some secondary and tertiary timings to help stability. Be very careful with how ASUS is defaulting tFAW, as it's normally supposed to be 4x tRRD at minimum, but for some reason, they are going lower than that. On a tRRD value of 7, tFAW would need to be at least 28, but on my board, it was 26. This would cause some serious instability if the window closes before you get the data you requested. Always double check those values and make sure they are in line with each other.

If you still need assistance, let me know.

Get on beta 0803 and just use the DOCP profile. If you do not want to be on a beta bios, select the DOCP profile from your current bios and just change clock speed to 2400 to start and see how that goes.

I am using bios version 0803 and i have tried the DOCP profile and changed the frequency. Still doesnt work

If there is anything specific that you need me to clarify, let me know. I can find the exact terminology in your motherboard's manual if it helps.

I dont know what tFAW or tRRD means but I think I'll figure it out

tFAW is your Four Active Window timing. tRRD is your Activate to Activate timing. It's directly involved with determining how many clock cycles are needed to activate commands across different banks. They are directly related to each other, and must work in harmony to remain stable. Having a tFAW that is shorter than 4x tRRD, means the window of time can close before your able to complete the clock cycles necessary to activate commands across other banks. When this happens, you end up with a crash, or worse, corruption. AMD recently provided a nice glossary for these timings on their community update blog: https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2017/05/25/community-update-4-lets-talk-dram

Feel free to give it a read, as it will likely improve your understanding of these timings, along with their relationship to each other.

Sorry to hear that. I cheated a little by getting the flarex RAM. But even my g.skill aegesa got to 2400mhz.

I don't see it in here, you are using 2 sticks and not 4 right?

Yes im only using 2 sticks.

Small update:

I found out that even if I manually set the frequency to 2133mhz. It wont boot. And even if I set it to lower that that, it still wont boot and I get the same screen. Here is a photo of the screen I get every time I set the ram frequency to something else than automatic.
