My girlfriend is getting Cox setup at her condo - 50 MB/s for now. I would like to get a decent modem & router for her. Any recommendations? I am kind of lost on this stuff.

Arris Surfboard is pretty much the go-to modem brand, as long as you get one new and don't make it overheat (don't put anything on top of it, leave it standing up instead of lying down if possible) it will be fine. At 50Mb/s even the SB6121 would work fine, but I'd go for the SB6141 because being able to connect to more streams means that you won't feel congestion from neighbors as much.

Router is a harder recommendation. How big is the area that needs coverage? Do you care about how fast local transfers are? Is there a lot of competing networks nearby? How many devices would connect? Do you want a guest network that for devices that can't reach the main network?

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Cox is a Cable company (DOCSIS), unless they've started being a Telco too.

I don't know any US ISPs, I'm Canadian (except for AT&T and Verizon).

My go to choice usually is the Technicolor TC4300 or the Thomson DCM475. If you can't get those I would get one of those cheap Huawei units (MT130U). They are modem only. For router I would get a cheap Gigabit router with really bad wifi for $30, then get a Unifi AP Pro.

Netgear provides some pretty decent cable modems, up to ones that support 1.4Gbps (doubt anyone has that speed on cable though)

Sorry for the late response. I have heard good things about the Arris stuff. Condo is 1400 sq. ft. - I don't think we would have more than 3-4 devices connected at a time? I have no idea if there are competing networks near by but I would assume so since this is a condo and not a home?

Any recommendations for a router?

Take a look at TPLink Archer routers, they are all pretty good value in terms of performance per price, with good range and stability. The Archer C7 v2 should do well for you, but if you want you can get the C9. If the C7 is more than you want to spend, then I'm a fan of anything made by TPLink, Asus, or Buffalo. Asus and Uffalo in particular make routers that are specifically compatible with DD-WRT.

Any recommendations for a router?

Netgear R7000 running AdvancedTomato firmware. Hands down, still the best bang for buck router on the market for 1200-2400 sqft areas or 2 story homes of the same space. I've setup many of these routers, and most have uptimes over 100 days right now. (we had a power outtage due to storms a few months back)

If you have any detailed questions for me, ask away. And DO NOT get or rely on a Modem/Router combo Unit. They are terribly unreliable and usually don't work well.
