I'm in the planning stages of a new build, and I'm looking for some help keeping it under budget. I can afford around $2,000 US including peripherals. I already have a mouse, headset, and Microphone. The PC will be used for both gaming and editing/rendering. I have a basic idea, but suggestions and changes are welcomed.

BOI

Get a nice EVGA card, such as this

Founder's Edition cards are pretty bad, performance and thermals wise

Roses are red

Pretty solid but here are a few improvements you could make:

  • Purchase windows from third party (reddit, kinguin) for a lot less than from newegg.
  • Might want to switch out that FE video card for a third-party one, especially with a midtower.
  • Invest in a nicer case. I bought my computer with another low-ish end rosewill case, and after a while you start to regret it. You're probably saying "I'll make do" or "it doesn't really matter", but in the end if you aren't at least 98% satisfied with your case, you're going to be looking for new cases.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Yeah, I was planning on buying windows 3rd party, just wanted to include it in the price estimate. As far as the case goes, any suggestions? I'd like to keep it a mid tower for size, but if a full would be better for thermals then I could move up as long as the price is right. The only real requirement is it needs to have a front usb 3.0. Is the extra $100 for a third party 1080 TI really worth it? I haven't found any thermal benchmarks to confirm or deny.

How much would spend on the case? Trust me, these low end cases are bad and have bad air flow. I spent £30 on a case, it has bad air flow. and bad cable management.

The FE cooler vs third party cooler is basically the same with the 1070's, 1080's but with more power applied. You should be able to find tons of those benchmarks floating on the web.

Suggestions for cheaper cases (that are still really good) are the NZXT S340, Enthoo P400/p400s.

I think I remember from seeing CES that a bunch of the brand names would be releasing better budget cases this year. But you determine if you want to wait that long.

If I can keep it under $100, I should be able to do it.

With good shopping over the next month, I should be able to build it for less than $2000, which was my goal. I made a mistake in the original list and selected the Ryzen 7 1700 instead of the 1700x, which comes at a higher clock speed as well as having XFR. I know I could get a less expensive keyboard, but it matches my mouse. I'm still not sure about the monitor, but we'll see. More suggestions are always welcomed.

EDIT: Also, the build flags the watercooler for possibly needing a mount adapter to fit on the motherboard. Anyone know if that is the case?

So. Keyboard. I know you could get one for less expensive, but I've that Razer keyboards are low-quality compared to other mech keyboards of that price so do with that what you please.

About the water cooler, it seems like you'll need one. I found one example here (http://ttpremium.com/product/water-3-0-series-aio-liquid-cooler-am4-bracket/) for about 7 USD.

So yeah. Good luck.

After more research, it seems like the 1700 and the 1700x perform within 5% of each other in benchmarking, for both gaming and rendering, making the 1700 a much better price/performance. If anyone has more knowledge to share on that subject, I'd love to hear it.
