I'm working on an upgrade for my gaming build (I can spend about 1000 USD on it, but the less cost of the upgrade the better).

Currently this is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Z9xrQV

What I am looking for is an upgrade for my GPU and/or CPU so I can run a 1440p 144hz monitor.

I was thinking a GTX 1080/1080 Ti and the Acer XG270HU, but need suggestions.

I'm running a 1080 and it smashes everything at 1440P. I would look at that and your monitor and wait on upgrading the CPU, unless you flash your bios an drop a 7700k in

get a 1080 and a I7 7700K(or 6700K if the motherboard dosent have a Kabylake BIOS)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

What kind of fps do you get on games like Overwatch, or Titanfall 2? For more clarification, I am looking to play at max at about 144hz constant. (going to be getting a few games this fall such as Destiny 2 and Shadow of War).

I think the lowest I have seen is around 65 FPS ultra on Watch Dogs 2. If you want 144hz you're gonna need serious horse power, and SLI support. I don't have either of those games, but most games 60 - 100 FPS for my 1080 - keep in mind I'm on water so I get good boosts. 144hz probably gonna need 1080 SLI or a 1080ti

Yeah, I'll probably go for a 1080 Ti with that kind of FPS on the 1080. I'm not sure water cooling will make a huge difference though, even with the speed increasing until a high temp. Maybe the Corsair Hydro GFX?

it does make a difference but not enough for you to spend £400 - 600 on building a good loop to maintain the temps/boost. Pascal works on a kind of varied boost profile vs temperature, the boost clock reducing as gpu temp increases. My 1080 still around 42C and 2050mhz, If it hits 45C the clock drops to 2037mhz and so on. I would expect clocks down around 1900mhz at 70C on air.

Like I said, in the games I play. Overwatch is pretty easy to run, not sure about TF2, but looking at benchmarks, even a 1070 can average 160 FPS in Overwatch

Titanfall 2 is a difference fish, 96 FPS from a 1080 and 114 from a Titan X

Ok, that makes more sense, an air cooled 1080 ti is probably what I'll get. Most heavy games like ARK and The Division run 30-50 FPS on my 970 right now, and from what I've heard most games this fall won't run too heavily. I've also found a G-Sync monitor to go with it now. https://us-store.acer.com/monitors/27-predator-xb1-gaming-monitor-xb271hu-abmiprz

Ok i thought your budget was $1000 USD lol? thats a $600 monitor and a $700 GPU :D

It maybe wise to wait on the monitor a few months with HDR monitors starting to be released. HDR is very iq upgrade, looks amazing on my 4k TV, admittedly i only tried ME:Andromeda

I found both for over $100 off, and my budget is roughly $1000.

I did look at HDR, but I wasn't able to find any 1440p 144hz monitors with it, only 4k.

Here's the main benchmark I looked at for 1080 Ti info:593f5e57a1753_Inked2017-06-1210_45_59-GeForceGTX1080Tireview_PCGamer_LI.jpg.fb5b40f9644286f378e5d6f7db12bce5.jpg
