Using this site https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html,

we see the I5-6600k scores 2,148 in single thread performance, while the Ryzen 7 1700 scores 1,753 in single thread performance.

Is this a reasonable way of comparing CPUs when deciding on a purchase? Using these numbers I would conclude that the i5 is generally better in games.

Look at as many benchmarks as you can.

Since you're looking at overclockable CPU's, try to find OC'd and non-OC'd tests to see potential and base performance. Also, look at the test benches themselves. Are the builds on equal ground (do the parts match except for what's being tested?) or do they have something that isn't equal (RAM speed or a different GPU/SSD).

That makes sense, though I'm having troubles finding more benchmarks. Where do most people look when comparing cpus?

Passmark is not the best benchmark out there.

Also purely singlethreaded performance is not all that matters for games (though it is very important).

So what else matters? Most games dont use more than 4-6 cores correct?
