please don't try anything of that sort....it is very risky business and the returns are not worth it!!

Yes it will help

No it is not worth it unless you do it just for fun. its quite risky and your warrant voids (doh)

As far as I'm aware' date=' people still lap Sandy Bridge processors to improve temps, if it's necessary. With Ivy Bridge, delidding is apparently the way to go.[/quote']

Sandy bridge chips were soldered to the IHS, so lapping the IHS would improve cooling performance.

Ivy bridge had TIM between the chip and the die, so delidding it would be a lot more beneficial than lapping. Also, running it without a lid altogether would be best; it'd be risky, but would have the best temperatures.

the die isn't the problem. it is the razorblade thing.

you cant put your razorblade more than 2mm under the IHS, because you will cut in some small capacitors under the IHS.

Running it without IHS isn't a problem, a lot of chips had, and still do have no IHS (for example amd graphicscards and various chipsets).
