Hello, I new here and I'm not totally sure if this is the correct place to be asking. But is there a way to request Linus does a certain kind of video?

I've been looking for a Windows 10 dark theme, but nearly all of the guides out there are out of date or otherwise just don't work.

If you spend any decent amount of using windows explorer that bright white can really strain your eyes, so I'm trying to get rid of it.

There are high contrast themes, but they mess up the interface far too much.

That's something very old that has actually been incorporated into standard Windows 10. What that does is make your Windows apps dark themed, but it does not effect windows explorer, which is the main source of white glare from your monitor.

Thank you for trying to help, though.

Where's the official setting to turn it on?

You don't want that, right now it is only possible through custom theme's i have tried most of them and they are total garbage at the moment. It is not anywhere near usefull, some items are hard to see and some is basicly invicible. And draws alot of CPU Power from your PC.

But anyways... Here are the best one:

Q: How many prolog programmers does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Yes.

Yeah, that's more or less what I figured. It's been a real hassle trying to do this. Which is why I was trying to find out if Linus would do a video about it. He's skilled in what he does, so if he endorses it, it probably works fine.

But anyway, thank you. I'll give the one linked a try.

I agree that there really should be a dark theme for Windows 10 file explorer, but I really think a windows implementation is the only way. Having scetchy programs theming your main file exploerer just doesn't seem like a good idea... But then again, we really can't expect it from Windows so this really is your only option.

If we're talking eye strain though, you could just get an application to tone down blues at night for your display.

I am not sure this works outside of Windows 10 Insider Program, but you can enable UWP File Explorer.

However:

  • It is really work in progress
  • Doesn't file extensions
  • No multi-window
  • No drag and drop
  • Partitions appears as folders
  • Very Limited

Just right-click on your desktop (or wherever empty), pick New > Shortcut, and enter:

explorer.exe shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App

Then click on Next, set a name like File Explorer, click on OK. And now open it.

Of course, Windows 10 needs to be set to Dark mode to have it in dark themed.

Else than that, you can reduce your screen brightness to reduce eye strain, or enable Night Mode in Windows 10.

Thanks for replying. But yeah, that reduces windows functionality too much to be worth it. I tried it and it just slows down how you use windows so much.

And as for just reducing screen brightness. I already have it low to the point where if I go any lower it will effect image quality, which I can't really do because I work mainly on image editing all the time. So if I make my screen darker I'll miss details in the image.
