HDD spindown?

I created a storage server using Fedora and Amahi, and want the drive to spin down after a certian time. I've tried "hdparm" but it doesn't recognize the command. I would like to get as much life as possible out of the drive. Any ideas?

HDD's can spin for a long time, like 50000+ hrs.

It's got a Pentium 4 HT, 2 gigs of RAM, some generic power supply, and an older 500gb Samsung hard drive.

What error do you get with hd parm? Is hdparm installed?

SATA, and I get an error saying that it can't find the command.

edit : are you running it as sudo?

sudo dnf install hdparm should do it.

It's installed. What command do I use if I want the drive to spin down after 3 minutes?

sudo hdparm -S 36 /dev/DEVICELETTER(so something like sda)
