Hey there, I am seeking help.

I have an oldish computer that I have wanted to sort of upgrade.

Here are the specs:

CPU: Core2 Quad Q8200 2.33ghz

Motherboard: LGA 755

RAM: 2g x 2 of ddr2

GPU: NVidia GeForce 9500gt

PSU: 300w - 400w (Guessing)

Storage: 2 x 500g HDD

As you see here, it is about 7-9 years old.

I have been wanting to buy a different graphics card for it, so I will be able to play basic games well, but I can not decide what to buy.

I am not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on it and I want a graphics card that is not too power hungry or will be suitable for the PSU I have listed above.

I have been looking at gt 710, but not sure.

PLEASE HELP!!!

You could try some of the 400-500 or 600 series from nVidia. I've used a 430 2gb DDR3 for like 5 years and it even let me run GTA V on normal settings which is pretty good and it was not that power hungry.

if you want a low spec GPU then better take a GT 730 with GDDR5 and 1 GB it will be much better then the 710. Also buy it used so you get a better price on it. If you don´t want to upgrade your motherboard then keep the CPU and just take the GT 730

It is a FSP group inc. PSU and it may be 250 watts?

my budget is up to 100 aud, but I can go higher if nessacery

Can you like give us the model number for the PSU? And I'd recommend maybe a 550Ti or something for the system.

I would aim for a used 750 Ti, the 730 and 710 are trash and the 710 is a re branded 210

As mentioned by @Shiv78, I'd try to get a 750 Ti. These older Core 2 systems can benefit greatly from them.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

It's a long shot, especially since I don't know your technical aptitude, but if you're willing to give it a shot then I'd recommend grabbing a LGA-771 Xeon and sticker modding it for your LGA-775 motherboard. I did this to my old Q6600 machine with a Gigabyte-P35-DS3L motherboard to breathe new life into an ancient machine. An overclocked Xeon E5450 is roughly equivalent to a Haswell i3 and i5 in performance and a mere $20 USD on ebay. So on top of slotting in a relatively newer GPU, if you have a few bucks to throw at upgrading the CPU, you can't beat $20 for Haswell level performance.

Sorry for the potato pic, but the E5450 @ 4.2GHz is the green bar, and the yellow and purple bars are Haswell i3's and i5's respectively:
