In windows settings, go to the activation section, and click troubleshoot. it will check for problems, find no problems, and then there will be a little link that says "I recently changed hardware on this device". when you click, it will deactivate your old mobo, and reactivate your new one. EZ PZ

your windows key needs to be linked to your Microsoft account though.

that is exactly what it says in that microsoft thread :P

you can link your Microsoft account to the Windows 10 digital license on your device. This can help you reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later, such as replacing the motherboard.

Yes you need to link your account.

Is there any reason you haven't done that already.

Well,was the Old Computer a Prebuilt or OEM,made in a shop? Or you built the PC with a OEM license? In all those matters,your product key is attached to the OLD motherboard,so you need to buy a new license

So I have the key or so I think.

@Gaurav S Rao @RadiatingLight

What type of license was your Windows install using? Do you have a screenshot of your System Properties on your Old board? That will help retrieve if it is OEM or Retail license,and you can check yourself in that screenshot,etc where it said "Windows Activation",etc.Was the Word "OEM" in your serial number of Windows? Store built seems to me like a OEM license.

@Gaurav S Rao

I live in cambodia the store I go to chantra, I dont how to put this but are very mediocre. Im pretty sure one time I asked to get a sata cable from them I think they just pulled one out of a motherboard's box that they were selling. When I got my computer I got a computer a 5 dollar keyboard and mouse. No windows doucmentaion at all. All I have to work with is what is in my PC currently. They most likey bought a copy of windows that you get online or got a windows disc. There is a small chance for my windows to be a fake but highly unlikey due to the fact I got it as windows 8 and upgraded to windows 10. Here is a screen shot of the full activation page that is about all I can manage. How ever I do know what the product key is.

I dont mean that it is fake Windows,though it could be a license that comes with a prebuilt computer that a manufacturer or small business build.I don't see the word "OEM" in that (usually when it is a OEM license,you see the word OEM in the Product ID) so there are good chances that it is a retail license,but unfortunately,if that is the case,you will have to call Microsoft support,or try something else (their activation calling center takes like 10 minutes of talk until Windows is activated) and I don't think ProduKey will always give the exact product key,though my bet is,it will.Probably you typed in wrong key,or Produkey gave a wrong key,BTW is your network driver installed? This happened to me when I was trying to Activate Windows Vista (the network drivers were installed,but it needed a restart to function,check if your network drivers are installed) It did not activate until I restarted it and I tried to activate again,it worked!

Or the activation servers are busy

It could be torrented Windows 8 that came with your computer,and the key could be illegitimate and worked for some time until you swapped the motherboard.Could be anything.

If still no go,Call Microsoft,ask them.And if they say the key is not legit,whatever,there is no other choice than to:buy a legit Windows key from MS website or kinguin.net (if you live in US,not sure if all around the world,internationally) and buy a retail license or oem license (if you buy a OEM license,it cannot be transfered to another motherboard after this,a Retail license can be transfered)
