Hey, first Topic, so let me know if any particular edits need to be made but the essential gist of the topic is such; I am planning a parts upgrade of my computer to better fulfill the purpose for which I built it in the first place.

BEFORE COMMENTING, Please read the entire start topic.

Spoiler

Budget & Location:

For budget, as I expect this build to take me months of work, I don't have a particularly set budget, realistically I would like it so that each part with respect to functionality (Exempting a GPU) does not exceed $400 per part. RAM is tricky because I want performance but I don't need a flashy design on it. For those wondering, I live in the United States so that is $USD. I expect this end rig to not exceed $2500-$3000

Aim:

This system is built for two things, though technically three. 1. It's a gaming rig, cut and dry, I want the capability to play AAA titles at max performance and detail. 4K is not necessary and is a luxury to me 2. This rig is a recording rig, I use OBS to record gameplay and audio, no face cam, and thus need the rig to be powerful enough to run both simultaneously. 3. This rig handles all my video editing and encoding, so it needs to be beefy enough to handle this task as well. I am also looking into the potential for video streaming.

Monitors:

To start, I am only running 1 Monitor, but would eventually like to branch out into 2 or 3 for a decent to manage workstation and screenspace. For those wondering, 4K is fine and acceptable to recommend but I am mostly focused on 1080p content at 60Hz or greater. Also Monitor cost should not be included in the Price limit as I will not be buying the monitor until my rig is finished.

Peripherals:

I don't need to purchase any peripherals for this rig. As far as the OS is concerned I am going to buy Windows 10 Pro shortly after this post so the OS price will not be included in the build as I obtained Windows 10 Pro for free from the windows upgrade back in it's infancy. In terms of Case Preference, I'd prefer a minimalistic aesthetic and a decent amount of I/O ports such as USB, Thunderbolt, LAN, Display, and more. Webcams are unnecessary, I have a mic, and I have speakers, both 3.5mm  jacks so there's that. I would like a Blu-ray burner/read/write drive, but it is optional not required.

Why I am upgrading:

While I am completely happy with my computer, I am finding with most games load times are bad, anywhere between 1-2 minutes per load screen and LOD zone in the case of open world games, on top of that, I can't record many of the games I wish to because I A. Don't have a capture card. B. Don't feel the money for one is worth it in the long haul. I would prefer to keep most of my Rig internal, but that may not be possible.

Unmentioned Items:

I am partially interested in SLI and will hear you all out on suggestions. Overclocking and Liquid Cooling are a no go, I don't have a reason to bother with both, at least to my knowledge and experience. This computer was a senior project where I built it from the old parts of an HP eventually changing it completely to what it is now. I would also prefer more modular parts and a plan that optimizes airflow for cooling.

So after originally posting this thread 2 months ago I meant to update it about a month ago but ran into technical difficulties. That being said below in the spoiler is the updated design recommendation requirements.

Spoiler

Budget & Location:

First I live in the United States and all my prices are in $USD. Second I don't want any part exceeding 400 but in saying that there are some exceptions.

CPU: I know this is tough but the CPU no matter what, should not exceed 400 unless it and the motherboard can wait in your idea of an upgrade path. Motherboard: I do not need extremely expensive boards and would prefer to keep this price as low as possible while adhering to things listed below. RAM: Let me be real here, I do not care for all the super expensive RAM packages out there and am fine with that, I plan to better define this but no RAM packages exceeding $200 MAX. Graphics Card: Suggestions are fine but due to the current state, NVidia is most likely my choice and as such I don't want suggestion exceeding $600 before tax. Case: While you can suggest a case, I have one picked and intend to update with a pcpartpicker list, suggestion even still should not exceed $300 max. Cooling: All suggestions are welcome but only on the fan end and not exceeding $160 max. Power Supply: For the Power Supply let me be frank, I plan to build this system for power efficiency over sheer output and the original limit of $400 remains on this. Monitor: Alright so for this it's tricky, since my computer is in my living room. Suffice to say, I'd prefer TV's with a native resolution of 1080p and a measure of at least 32 inches, but if there is an equivalent monitor with sound output options I can work that out.

Aim:

This system is built for two things. 1. It is primarily a gaming computer, as such it's first use will be for PC Gaming. 2. This computer will be doing recording alongside the games it plays, as such the processor should be fast and beefy enough to handle this.

Monitors:

To reiterate, I have my rig hooked up to a 60Hz TV with a native resolution of 1360x768. I would like to upgrade the monitor/TV in question to at least a native 1080p if not a higher refresh rate.

Peripherals & Operating system:

When it comes to peripherals, I am currently using a Logitech Unifying receiver mouse and keyboard. I also am currently using 3.5mm jack Speakers and Microphone as part of my recording environment. I do not intend to buy other peripherals for it so I do not want to see any suggestions in this regard.

Why I am upgrading:

The reason for upgrading has shifted slightly since the original post, the simplest reason is that my computer is not what I want it to be. The longer answer is that despite the NVMe drive and Graphics card currently in my computer, recording games that don't run in 2D is a terribly dry affair with very little good recordings being done. For those wondering I am currently trying to max out the gaming potential of my Rig and then will push more into it's recording potential.

Unmentioned Items:

I'll be blunt. NO OVERCLOCKING ANYWHERE! I am thankful for all the other suggestions but I felt I needed to specify this as many did not listen, if your RAM is above 2400MHz it's overclocked. As for water cooling, you may suggest it but I am in no way investing in a water cooled system at this point. RAM should remain at either 2133MHz or 2400MHz. I am mostly interested in Intel but will hear out AMD suggestions thanks to recent events in the CPU wars. Right now though I am primarily looking at socket 2066 and 1151 and the performance yields there. For AMD fans, I am interested in AMD but cannot guarantee their chips and boards will meet my needs or desires. As mentioned before this is a Single thread Gaming First type of build and the recording and editing come in second.

With all of that being said, my current rig looks something like this and will eventually be different, currently this is a long term project and my intention is that once the CPU and Board are switched I won't be upgrading further for over a year at least.

Current Rig:

CPU: Intel i3-6320 @ 3.9GHz (Not overclocked, Stock cooler.)

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 2133MHz 16GB

GPU: ZOTAC NVidia GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5

Case: InWin GROne Full Tower Case

Power Supply: Rosewill Bronze 1000w

Hard Drive 1: PNY 480GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD

Hard Drive 2: Non-Descript 1TB Toshiba HDD (Salvaged from old HP desktop)

If any more info is needed let me know and I'll put updates beneath this line.

Updates:

6/6/2017: I have purchased My OS and a single 480GB PNY NVMe M.2 SSD, I expect both to arrive by next week at the latest, so that will be part of my project soon.

08/08/2017: The OS and Drive are functioning and my rig has seen immense gaming performance boosts on that alone. I am currently looking into drive expansion and then case switching but with no clear idea on which I'd prefer to do first. Also Considering a Graphics Card upgrade before all of those as I worry about the little 1060 sitting inside my computer.

Edited by Shiruxriu
Over the past 2 months, many suggestions have been entered outside of the scope of the original intention and I felt I needed to clarify things from the get go.

Consider changing the font colour.

I am Unfortunately, using the standard black font for the post. I'll look into changing but can make no promises.

Yes, while the budget is indeed large, I am looking for recommendations that fit the first criteria of no part (Except GPUs) exceeding $400.

Forgive my late reply, but in the case of this build, doesn't it fall short in most benches other than multi-core?

This question is in a comparison of the the Ryzen R7 !700x vs. the Intel i7-7700K?

Well it will in gaming, but you say you want to do a lot more than that, so anything workstation esque is better on a 1700 due to the 8 cores with 16 threads

As I type this I must stress once again, NO LIQUID COOLING. I'm sorry for putting that in all caps, but I felt it wasn't stressed. Intel Xeon is a non-option due to the idea that, if I don't go to Ryzen for my CPU, QuickSync would be a nice option for recording, although x264 will probably be my encoder. Please do not stress on the monitor in recommendations, because I will not be focusing on them. So far these designs aren't bad, but I don't agree with a single GPU, while SLI is unnecessary, the option is nice. For cases, I should mention, my place is carpeted so breathing from the bottom for cooling is a no go. I like the Fully modular style of the case, but it's airflow seems, at first glance, questionable to me. Otherwise a lot of these builds seem good.

Sorry, but a quote got too big. So far the playing field has been levelled against Crucial's SSDs by PNY since PNY sells 480GB NVMe Drives @ $203 with shipping and handling, just not through Amazon or NewEgg, but on their own website. Aside from say, a HDD I don't want to focus too hard on a 3 Drive build that involves multiple SATA connections. For the Boot and Gaming Drive, I am looking at NVMe drives.

Every pc will take a hit when gaming while encoding next with it. With an i9 and threadripper upcoming I would wait a bit for those and see how overclockable those will be.
Although you mention you're not interested in overclocking, if you're going to encode next to gaming, it will make a big difference if you have 8 cores running at 4+ghz or just 1or2  at 4+ghz and the rest on <3.2 ghz.

I also would not go for SLI until you have your dreambuild and still have money to spend. In that case, only 2x 1080ti would be worth it and that's outside your price range.

G.skill said the ryzen x cpu's tend to allow for higher ram speed and ryzen is supporting 4000mhz soon. Also you should oc the cpu ryzen can get 4 ghz pretty easy and isn't hard to do. Could wait for threadripper roomer is it will be less then $1000 and that would give the best profmace for rendering as it should have 16 cores all able to run at 4GHz.

So First I have to stress this again, I am not liquid/water cooling. Second, While the board seem good a I am loosing one of the smaller PCI ports in favor of a second M.2 looks like, haven't looked too much into it's key types. Also that case is definitely being swindled to people for that price point. The last thing I can think about on this build is that honestly by the time I'm doing two 1080Ti's I will need a something beyond a Gold 80 plus rating, so I'm looking currently at some of Corsairs 80 Plus Titanium power supply units. Thoughts anyone? I know Linus covered it in a video.

Good quilaty Gold and Bronze psu are fine..the only diffrance is one will be cheaper on your power bill but genrally you have to have the psu for 10+ years to make up for it. A i7 7700k and 2 gtx 1080ti's can run with just a good 800watt psu. A AIO is very simple to use just put thermal past on the cpu if there isn't any on the AIO and you just put it on same as a air cooler would be. As for the case anything works it just I've heard cable management is very good in that case for the price. And that mobo has one if not the best vrm design for am4. And as am4 is going be lasting until at least 2020 I've heard having a high tier board will be nice as you don't have to upgrade it in the future to support a better cpu. And there is 2 m.2 slots. Most of the time the psu rated above gold are more for enterprise sy stems has having few hundred psu's that are using a few watts less can be a big saving to that said company.
