Hi guys,

I need some help with deciding what Camera to buy. For my college course I need something to film and shoot photos with and my budget is 400€.

I see the old Canon 500D is around 250€ while the new one 1300D Rebel is roughly at the same price point. Same with the 100D and the 700D/1100D.

Are there any reasons not to buy the older generation? I mean there is gotta  be a reason why old stuff still retails at the same price as new stuff, right?

I have a NIKON D3300 lying round, and for the price, it's great. I know it's not a cannon, but it does the job, and has decent lens support

Bow down to me humans.

I can't help if you don't quote me. How am I supposed to know if you need my premium support? Now starting at £399.99 a year.

Also, be a sport and mark the correct answer as the correct answer. It will help pour souls in the future when they are stuck and need guidance.

I wouldnt mind buying Nikon if its cheaper than canon but I would need an adapter for my old lenses since those came with the old 1000D and I planned on only buying the body (if it saves me some money that is)

get something cheap, image quality is about the same. the only big difference are some small features, like video.

Right now filming is more important to me but I dont need features like tilting the display on the camera it self.... (i think)

the 500d doesn't do film (I think) so I think the Nikon, mainly because it's allways worked, whereas my 1300d is at cannon for the 3rd time right now...

the Nikon films in 1980x1080 and stills in 6000x4000

The Canon 500D and the 1300D are two different tiers of camera models in Canon's lineup.  Don't mix them up.  The same for every other camera manufacturer, there are different tiers and higher tier models drop prices as they age to be close (if not less) than prices of newer but lower tier models.

There are other stuff besides sensor and image processor.  Weather sealing, whether the body is made of plastic/composites or metal/alloy.  Certain functions and features such as continuous shooting speed, ISO range, etc.  And even if the camera is a few years old, if the original price when it was released was high, then even a 50% drop may bring it close to the price of an entry level model.

so basically it isnt worth buying an old camera. I thought I could save some bucks on them but I guess it isnt like some refurbished PC or anything

Value is in the eyes of the beholder.  Camera tech doesn't change or advance every year like computer tech.  A camera from 10 years ago is still capable of producing fantastic images as well as the most recent most advanced camera.
