Low Buidget 10GB Network?

Hi Guys,

 

I am looking to setup some 10gb links to my local file server, i have seen quite a few 10gb SFP+ card on eBay for fairly reasonable prices but i am confused by all; the different chip sets and seemingly chip set specific cables. Can anyone recommend some good low budget 10gb hardware? Preferably a small switch (4 PORTS?) and some compatible cards. I dont mind buying used but i dont have old school pci.

The most expensive part will be the switch. I got a LB4m for $80 and it has 2 10Gb sfp+ ports and 48 1Gbe. I will update this with my setup in a bit.

Most of this should work for you but the key thing to find is a switch that fits your needs. The LB4m is the cheapest 10Gb switch with 2 SFP+, the LB6m is a 24x10Gb SFP+ 4x1Gbe (cost around $200-$300) Your best bet is to find a used switch off ebay or get a LB4m and/or LB6m (depending of the amount of 1Gbe ports needed)

 

As for Cables I would recommend getting transceivers and fiber due to it being cheaper to change lengths and has cheap long runs. You can either get a copper DAC Cable (SFP+ to SFP+), Fiber AOC cable (SFP+ to SFP+) or get Transceivers and fiber.

It is not that bad, I think Newegg has those switches refurbished and Amazon has those NICs. You are just going to pay a bit more.
