Help with adding subwoofer into setup!

alexjt11

Hi, so I really have no idea about audio stuff, except I like listening to music!

I currently have this:

Behringer UB502 mixer.

2x KRK Rokit 6 Gen 2

and I want to add a subwoofer from Wharfedale which I got for free.

My issue is that the subwoofer runs on normal speaker cable rather than anything like a jack or xlr. What do I need to do to make it work? Do I need a new mixer? Maybe something has the old speaker stuff and jacks? Do I need a speaker cable to jack? Really what do I need to make it work :D

so basically what you are attempting to expand is that your "old" subbie has copper cables that you dont know how to attach to an mixer?

what do you define the "normal cable"
each cable has a name
this triggered me alot as an audiophile

Okay. First chill mate. I said im not a audio guy so im sorry I got it wrong.

So. My current Rokits use 3/4inch jacks to xlr.

The Wharfedale is using speaker cable (http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/global/en/training_support/selftraining/pa_guide_beginner/cable/)

Its at the bottom of this website.

I want to use the wharfedale so how do I do it with the mixer I have or do I need new stuff?

Ye I have loads of my dads old cables when he used to run them. So If I plug them into the 'tape out' section then it will just run?

I'm not american, and a line level signal cannot drive a sub woofer.

***redacted for being absolute horse-shite***

Just stop. Now.

@alexjt11 ignore pretty much everything he/she/it said.

You're mixing an active system (krk rokit's) with a passive sub, which means a few things:

1. you'll need an amplifier for the sub. (from what i've found it's about 70W so something around a 100W amp will do). The sub is 8 ohm, so you're getting into the realm of proper amps, something like this would be good.

2. You'll want a crossover. this will essentially split the signal into a high frequency signal (for the rokits) and a low frequency signal (for the sub). This needs to be at line level, something like this. (this will take the stereo signal and output a stereo signal along with a mono sub feed).

You would connect your mixer outputs into the crossover. Out of the crossover the high frequency outputs to the L/R speakers (in your case your rokit 6's) then the sub output into the amplifier. From the amp you'll need speaker cable to the terminals on the sub. Then have a play with the crossover controls until you've got it sounding decent, probably somewhere around 100Hz ish looking at this.

Judging by the connections of that subwoofer it should have a crossover inside, so no additional crossover is needed.

And for the amp, a expensive one is not needed, one with enough power should be fine.
