Alien v1.0

r4q

Hi guys,

so, I've been planning on this for quite a long time now and it's finally here (sort of...)

kEv1zjV.jpg

The planning is complete, the parts arrived and I'm about to get building it anytime now :D

It's not the END yet but a START, since I'm planning on getting some more stuff into it, but for now, it's this.

I know some people might question the choice of components that I got but it's fine, we have such a great variety of hardware right now that everyone can choose something that suits his/hers needs perfectly (at a pricepoint) and those are my choice, not gonna be sorry about it :)

Considering the fact that my last PC update was back in 2012 or so, this is a really big deal for me and even with X299 incoming I belive it's gonna serve me well

PC Part Picker link for those might wanna check it out:

Alien 1.0

If you're wondering where did the name came from - this build is going to be heavily green-themed and watercooled with a custom loop later on with possible some nice case modding aswell , hopefully I will get to make it resemble Alien at least a little :D

But that's the future plans for it, for now I want to assemble this thing and get it up and running. Tuning will come after.

Hope you'll like it and keep your fingers crossed for me on it please :D

Cheers

Are you planning on water-cooling it? Just wondering 'cause of the FE card. Also, this build is at such an awesome level it needs a custom loop.

So, while waiting for few minor things to arrive (still missing the keyboard tho :F) I figured that the new build needs a suitable surrounding and my fixed-on-the-fly desk I made right after moving in was looking kinda... "meh"  like that :

dbpBCKt.jpg

even though I was thigh on budget after purchasing all the core components I managed to pull off something slightly better I hope...

+ another "semi-scrap" piece of wood for the desk

+ 4 cheap aluminium legs

+ borred wood cutter maschine from a friend (the poles make it hard to go wall to wall but with a little bit of manual work I managed to fit it :P )

and the result was :

Z2xXrXu.jpg

I think it looks much better this was and I also have some space near the cut outs for the cable managment. but

I was still left with loft of crap laying around so a quick search for the cheapest containers that will do the job ended out with this :

Ni2WRrF.jpg

and last but not least.... since the build and whole setup is going to be green-themed I picked up some old rgb strips scraps and put them together to go along with :

3lD2vR0.jpg

so this took me last 2 days but I think it's better to prepare the space before the build so I don't have to deal with that later.

Anyways, starting building the v1.0 today gonna post something tomorrow :)

Cheers

and the initial build is now complete !

I managed to get the CPU to 4.6Ghz which I think is pretty nice for a 6850K - so far no stability issues, but I will need some more testing to that. Some quick overall benchmarks for some that might be interested :

http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/3889763

If some of you are interested in any specific benchmarks let me know, I will try to cover them, althou it's not anything "new" so you've probably seen it all already :P

I didn't OC the GPU yet though, mostly because it's just stock FE and I will play around with it after I get some watercooling for it.

incoming photo spam here:

PICS OR DIDN'T HAPPEN

I know I need some more green stuff to go with (keybaord still in shipping goddammit :F) but I'll get there soon. Also I want to change the fans to green/rgb but I have to wait some for that (all of them are 140's and I can't decide which to get, maybe something new and cool will hit the shelves soon)

oh and I know that the HDD area on the bottom is ugly AF (could at least get 2x WD green , right? :P) but I want to move them to the back later on and use this place for my reservoir :)

for now, that's all. Gonna update once something new arrives.

so what do you think? lame or not ? :P

Well there are SOME reasons behind that but I could propably easily go with 64GB aswell, but for the sake of having the most I could get I went for it :P

It's not like I'm ever gotta have to throw it out to replace it or something, right ?

This is LTT, right? I think Linus would approve of 128GB Corsair Dominator Platinum memory being used on your build. And now you can have every single one of his videos open in chrome and not run out of RAM! Though you may want a couple more threads on that CPU for that kind of workload...

Haha I wish it was LTT :P it's just personal use but for the sake of not being hated over the forums I will avoid saying the exact purpose of my workload :P

I can just say that CPU power is going to be fairly enough but I might wanna get a second GPU for that, because the workload is heavy on both DRAM and GPU RAM - crazy eh? :P

oh and btw some more benchmark scores:

So finally one new part arrived and I must say I'm pretty amazed by it's quality....

Corsair K95 Platinum - that aluminium base is really solid and the cherry MX speed are pretty damn nice for someone who like a little of tactile feedback with low force and short strokes. From a few different switches that I've tested at friends these particular ones I'm very happy with and even though it's my first own mechanical keyboard after just 2 hours with it I feel like I'm already used to it and it's great!

Some comparison photos and the whole setup view

( there are still some RGB fans missing from the final form of v1 but I will get them soon :P )

  • 5 months later...

So some new stuff arrived and I will be spending the weekend playing with it a little bit but I guess it might be worth a little update

Even tho there's still a lot to do the rig is performing flawlessly and I enjoy every step of this ride to tweak it even more ^^

New stuff :

second 1080Ti FE

cablemod black/green cable set

I know it's still a cable mess but some cable combs should arrive soon and then it will be nice I promise :P

also the only thing I'm missing are some RGB fans right now (still can't decide which one to choose that are available in both 120 and 140 mm :/)

after that the next big update will be a custom loop - for that I need to do some more research on which reservoir to get and where to place it

Now that the second graphics card is in place and running I can finally do some irl measurements

So that's it for now. I hope you guys like it so far :)
