What kind of programming? I'm taking college for programing so far I've been working with HTML/CSS/Javascript, C, C++ and my i5 6200u 4gb ram cheap Acer Aspire ES1-572-53GN has been more than doable... I did put a SSD on it though made wonders.

He's going through a course called "Infocomm Security Management"

I've attached screenshots of what he'll probably learn throughout his college years.

Good price, Well known brand, and more than exceeds the specs needed.

I have an older gen MSI, I've had 0 issues and when I go on the road for work, I put it through it's paces every day.

cheapest XPS 15?

has 8gb ram and 4gb vram

XPS is not that heavy so carrying it around everyday isn't really an issue

The XPS 15 that's being sold in my country exceeds my budget (by $500) and the XPS 13 doesn't have a dedicated GPU  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The specs are great but I don't think its easy to carry a 2kg laptop around with another bunch of books

I'm getting my cousin a laptop that according to their school's recommended spec, requires any notebook that has AT LEAST 8GB RAM and 1GB Dedicated graphics.

Anyone got any good recommendation? Something with excellent hardware if possible.

Thanks!

With budget like that you can even buy him a decent laptop with great graphic card.

Many my programmer senior in my college even use gaming laptop as their weapon,

Gaming laptop with gtx 1050 graphic are usually under $1000

Their weight are around 2.4 kg if your cousin doesn't mind

Example: Asus ROG Strix GL553V and Lenovo Y520

a.) buy a laptop backpack ( some are really nice and have room for books )

b.) if you're worried about a 5LB laptop being too heavy, you probably shouldn't go to college cause the books will weigh more than the laptop.

I'm just saying, 5LB isn't that heavy, really.

just get a thinkpad. programming is not intensive unless you plan to run a million VMs. something like the last gen x260 would be cheap and great.
