1. Budget & Location

Ideal would be ~$1.5k USD, but would like to not go above $2k, and hard cap is $2.5k.

2. Aim

Multiple purposes. I do some multimedia work, but I also do some homelab-type stuff.

3. Monitors

I already have a monitor

4. Peripherals

Already have peripherals

5. Why are you upgrading?

I currently am using 3 computers, but that's not working (each is only barely able to do their own roles).

Build 1: A modern, cheaper build

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Zmjzd6

(Also, I have an HDD leftover I can use for it)

Build 2: Server computer

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FXzVPs

(Also have another HDD to use, prices manual b/c eBay)

I know that the parts are not perfect, and I'm not even sure this is practical, so I was looking for you guys to tear it apart.

Thanks!

For the first build get a different ssd, SanDisk ssd Plus isn't that great, try to get rx 570 instead as it's not that much more, and NEX units aren't that great.

I made a few changes.

ASUS Prime X370 has a lot of memory issues currently so swaping with another motherboard will be better & you can get some savings

First build:

1. Get B350 mobo if you don't need those extra features

2. Get 2 8GB RAM. If possible, get RAM with higher speed since Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

3. Mediocre PSU, check out PSU tier list, get any from tier 1-3:

4. Mediocre SSD, check out SSD tier list:

5. Get a more powerful GPU if budget allows. RX 470/570/480/580 for instance

Second build:

1. CPU cooler seems mediocre, check out air cooler buying guide:

2. Why choose such a large case?

Nevermind forget that

ASUS fixed it with BIOS 0612 but still why the fuck he needs X370 when he will (maybe) get AMD GPU and he doesnt need SLI neither additional sata ports

Gotta say you picked bad Xeons cause of TDP only if you aren't rich so you can afford electricity bill if you plan to have that thing 24/7 online, but very very good choice for drives. You picked most reliable ones.

Well, that was about what I was expecting. The SSD rankings I was not aware of, but the PSU had seemed to be in the "okay" category so I left it since I was having trouble finding better in PC Part Picker, and also that one has a lot of connectors (particularly SATA ones). The nvidia GPU was because at least one of the programs I will be using seems to like nvidia, but I can double check that (or does AMD have CUDA cores and I'm misunderstanding something?). A large part of this was made by filtering for features and price in PC Part Picker (aka the reason for the cases), and then checking that the part didn't seem horrible, so yeah, I'll admit it was somewhat mediocre (also 1st time doing this). The Xeons were chosen due to price since I'm a student, so I can turn it off when not at use at home (& it won't matter when i'm at uni), and by the time I graduate it'll be obsolete anyway, but upgrading to even Broadwell had an estimated price increase in the four digits. I'm waiting to see what happens with Thread Ripper, but since Newegg is doing its sales I wanted to what parts I knew would be okay to get now (like SATA things, not the CPU itself yet). Also, sorry for short and/choppy posts, the main one was on the way out the door and this one is from a train.

Edit: RAM was chosen b/c price and going faster was still being worked out last I saw. I'll do some research later when I have time.
